Is it normal to still be bleeding?

So i had mirena coil put in 16th Dec to try and deal with my very heavy periods. Since then i've been bleeding nearly continously and not just spotting but enough to need to use tampons daily. The GUM clinic who fitted it told me to expect some bleeding for up to 6 months but i was expecting spotting, not a continous period! I can still feel the strings. Question is, has this happened to anyone else and their period has stopped (my hope). Or does it sound like the mirena won't work for me? Getting pretty fed up with it already so would like some light at end of the tunnel. Going back to my horrendous periods from before just isn't an option!

My gyn told me most bleeding settles down within 3 months, but up to six can be expected. I had seven months of almost continuous spotting & bleeding before giving up on the mirena. I'm not in the UK so have been offered a hysterectomy for heavy periods and I'm so excited at never having a period again or dealing with artificial hormones.
I hope you have better luck with the mirena than I had.
