Bleeding on HRT

helgarr28 · 29/01/2025 20:58

I have been on HRT for 18 months and have had no problems but on Sunday I started to have stomach ache which did feel like period pain. During the night I woke up to find I was bleeding heavily. I have seen GP and she told me to stop HRT for 6 weeks and referred me for an ultrasound.
The bleeding and cramps are still continuing and I am feeling so tired and down. I thought I was done with periods and yet here I am have a hideous one!

Has anyone had experience of this as I am getting myself worked up about it.

Bleed on HRT is more common than you might think. It happens to me fairly often. Usually when I have an illness eg Covid, have a steroid injection for my arthritis or at other random times. I’ve had more hysteroscopies than hot dinners in the past 5 years or so.
You must follow your doctor’s instructions and expect to be referred for hysteroscopy as all post-menopausal bleeding must be investigated. It’s very unlikely to be anything sinister but has to be done.
