I think I have a Bartholin Cyst - do I need to see a doctor or just continue with hot baths?

I've had a spot/small lump on my labia for a while, but it's been painless and I've had them come and go before.

As today has gone on it has got more and more painful. Had a look an earlier and it's really large now with a lovely white head on it.
It's right where Bartholin Cysts seem to tend to be.

I've had a hot bath but wondered if I need to get a GP appointment tomorrow (if I can) or will it most likely pop at some point and clear up on its own?

Hot bath, tea tree and witch hazel - worked a treat the one and only time I had one!

I have, unfortunately, extensive experience with Bartholin cysts/abscesses.

I've had 4 removed by surgery, multiple marsupilisations (sp?), a word catheter inserted, and several managed at home with antibiotics/sitz baths, so I got you covered!

Heat is your best friend. Sitz bath (bath filled with water as hot as you can take it, but only a couple of inches deep. Sit on a hot water bottle for as long as you can bear (not directly, wear clothes or wrap in a towel!). If it doesn't reduce within a couple of days, go to the Dr and get antibiotics.

My cysts/abscesses were all huge. At my last surgery the Dr said it was the biggest she's ever seen and it was the smallest I ever had!! Though I don't know if mine ever had a head, I don't think they did as the lumps felt 'deep' if that makes sense. So you might get away with a hot water bottle sorting it out!

Thank you @BeADinosaur

I've had a hot Sitz bath this morning and I will give it a day or two of continuing this to see if it settles down.

Mine exploded of its own accord! Lump was around for ages, started to get red and sore on a Friday evening but had burst by Saturday.

notacooldad · 22/01/2025 12:46

I've had three, I think over the decades. One was last summer. I've never been to the doctor about them.

They are painful but , for me, they only lasted maybe four or five days.
The first one I had was in my 20s. That was the biggest one and the stuff that came out of that was amazing!

Snozzlemaid · 22/01/2025 13:47

Well it started seeping and bleeding a little yesterday and the swelling started going down.
Today it has expelled a lot more (sorry if tmi) and it's no where near as sore.
So hopefully on the mend now.

Next time I will share more on the sporner thread Grin

Oh the relief I have just experienced this morning when my 5mm (and growing) BC exploded during first hot compress of the day 😅😅😅😅😅 There was a mix of blood and pus… next steps oh sporner experts? I’ve had it for around five days and was on the point of heading for the GP…
