Hair snapping off, feel awful!

Hello,
I'm early 40s and at my wits end with my hair. Currently on HRT and spironolactone which I thought would help but my hair keeps getting worse. I don't think Im balding on top its more its snapping off and have zero volume as nothing at the ends (shoulder length). Unfortunately I have a long face a have tried short hair but really doesnt suit me. Not low in iron and am taking B 12 supplements , biotin and folic acid , as well as minoxidil 5% twice a day and nioxin shampoo. Just wondering if I should try Prp injections? Looks worse in real life than pictures. Any advice?

How long have you been on HRT for? Might just be taking a while to work?

Unrelated I know but your eyebrows are amazing!

Minoxidil is drying and can contribute to breakage. Are you colouring your hair as well? I'd do one or the other.
When I stopped using shampoo (recommended by my hairdresser) the texture of my hair improved so much, that's also worth a try. I use Hairstory New Wash, there are other similar creamy conditioner-style products. I tried cowashing and never loved it.

Oh and have you had thyroid blood tests? Underactive thyroid can change the texture of your hair and loss of the outer third of the eyebrow is a common symptom.

I also came on to say could be an under active thyroid do you have any other symptoms of this e.g feeling the cold more ,tiredness ,weight gain

AttilaTheMeerkat · 16/01/2025 15:49

You need to have your thyroid levels tested.

HRT unfortunately did similar damage to my hair , tried various formations , but in the end came off of it as I was more saddened by the state it left my hair in , than the good it did .

Hi all, thats very helpful thank you. I had a thyroid test 6 months again which was normal nut will go back to the gp to retest as think it may have been borderline.
Understand what people are saying re colouring but Im not sure I could bear my mousy brown natural colour on top off limp awful hair!
Theraffarian thanks for your comment I never though the HRT may be damaging my hair so may see how I am off it.

Are you bleaching?

trainedopossum · 16/01/2025 20:35

Just to clarify OP I didn't mean you should stop colouring, just that doing both colour and minoxidil together is a bit rough on your hair. If there's no issue with actual thinning at the scalp maybe try a little time off from minoxidil and see if the breakage slows down. Even reducing to once a day might help.
Treat your hair very gently, reduce washing, brushing, combing, pulling, heat etc and see if the breakage starts to grow out.
Re blood tests, can you get the actual results with lab ranges? Thyroid UK is good at helping to interpret.
Hair looks great in the pics btw, maybe you're the only one to notice.
