Daughter (age 11) - period pain (?)

Hi all

My daughter started her first period last Wednesday, bled till Saturday. She's 11, coming up 12.

She had some cramps for a couple of days beforehand, but even though the bleeding has finished, she's still having some cramping now, 2-3 days later.

Seen GP this morning who said this can be normal as periods are all over the place at the beginning. Tested for UTI and given advice to look out for in case any signs of appendicitis.

Does anyone have any experience of girls/teens starting their periods and the cramping still continuing afterwards? Just wondering what to expect. Obviously if it continues to be bad, will get her checked over again.

Many thanks.

Sympathy to your DD. My DD's first period was very painful for her. She was nauseous and she fainted (something she hasn't done before or since, thankfully). She's 16 now and finds her periods much easier to manage as she's got used to them. She still gets cramps but won't take painkillers and just uses a hot water bottle.
Have you given your DD Calpol/ibuprofen? A hot water bottle really helps. And I believe chocolate, hot chocolate, and a bit of extra TLC make a difference!

Thanks @WhereAreWeNow , it's awful isn't it? Sorry to hear your daughter fainted, and glad she is finding it more manageable now.

I'm a bit worried about mine as she's still getting cramps a couple of days after the bleeding has stopped!

Sorry your daughter is suffering, I just wanted to say the spike in blood sugar after having something sweet like chocolate worsens blood loss and period pain. It is comforting for the time you are eating but that’s all.

I suffered a lot until eventually having a hysterectomy and what you eat on your period has a massive effect.

Foods like meat, sugar, and coffee may worsen menstrual cramps

A research review of studies in adolescent and teenage girls suggests that meat, oil, sugars, salts, and coffee worsened menstrual cramps. The findings indicate that foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, which are anti-inflammatory, may help to allevia...
