Mirena and sciatica?

Hello. Has anyone had the Mirena inserted and experienced sciatica? I started getting sciatica 2 days after my Mirena was inserted last month. It disappeared a month ago but it's now back again - lower back pain and numb bum. I have not experienced these symptoms prior to having the Mirena inserted. My mum asked me if it could be linked. I dismissed it as I thought it didn't add up but now I'm wondering! So has anyone experienced sciatica with Mirena?

You might be right!

About 20 years ago I had mirena fitted and had a lot of left side pain with pain shooting down my leg. I had the mirena out and the pain went away.

I now have another mirena which I am not getting on well with and have experienced the same pains.

@Katherineryan1986 thanks for replying. This is really interesting. Mine is also left side. I'm getting a numb buttock and sciatic pain. Started 2 days after insertion - I've only had it in a month.

I had the Mirena put in October and have been having numb Bum and pain in my right leg since soon after. My leg goes cold whilst I am asleep too. I never thought it could be because of the coil.
I think you could be right in thinking it's because of the Coil.

@Fourcandleforkhandle a numb bum is exactly what I'm getting! I'm wondering if it's pressing on or aggravating a nerve. How long have you had your coil?

I had piriformis issues after my first Mirena insertion, so you could be experiencing sciatic nerve issues related to that. I think sciatica with a spinal origin is less likely though.

Lollyl88 · 10/01/2025 19:46

@Postchristmasblah Thank you for commenting. How did you resolve your piriformis issue? Did you have to have the mirena out or did you manage to sort it another way?

I think it just sort of got better over time. I had a smallish baby at the time so wouldn’t have been doing much. That mirena stayed in for 6 years, as it was not well positioned and getting it out was a faff

@Postchristmasblah Thank you so much for taking the time to reply 😊

I think if I had a piriformis issue now I’d seek physio or do gentle stretching but as this is a new injury I’d rest it for a bit. from memory my first mirena was painful for a few days after going in and I had it checked by ultrasound. My second went in under GA and was much less painful.

Other possibilities are you have a lumbar spine issue that just coincides.

My lower back was very weak after I had the mirena coil put in. I had pain and it would make my back twinge like it was about to make me fall to the floor. For many other reasons I had the coil taken out after a few months and the problem went.

Lollyl88 · 10/01/2025 20:39

@Postchristmasblah thanks so much 👍

@Puppupandaway Glad to hear it resolved after removal. I really want to keep mine but if this pain continues I just won't be able to!

@Lollyl88 since October. I am also getting painful knees and joints . The Mirena coil has stopped my painful periods but now I have these other issues🙄

I just came on to post but I thought let me check if it's been posted before! I had the mirena inserted during a hysteroscopy. This was on Jan 8th, I've been having sciatic pain causing sleepless nights since about 20th Jan. I have had sciatica mildly many many years ago and nothing since.

I've not had sex since insertion. The pain is waking me in the night and I'm really struggling to get a good nights rest.

Sosocold · 02/07/2025 18:33

@Lollyl88 how are you getting on now? Do you still have the coil in?
I got mine fitted a couple of weeks ago and 2 days after insertion I've had such bad lower back pain, radiating down into my hip. The pain is too much for ibuprofen or paracetamol.
I've also been getting a recurrent uti which flared up after coil insertion so been in the wars somewhat.
Saw physio today and he said I've got nerve pain between discs at L2 and L3. Now wondering if all of this (not the uti) is coil related 🤔

Lollyl88 · 02/07/2025 18:39

@Sosocold sorry to hear you’re suffering! Back pain really is horrific. So I’ve not had my mirena out. I’m trying to persevere - am still getting erratic bleeding and it’s been in 7 months next week 😱 After about 3 months my back pain completely went. I really am convinced mine was related to the mirena as it was after this length of time that a few of my other symptoms disappeared so it might be. When I saw my GP and asked the question she said it couldn’t possibly be related. Too much of a coincidence for me tbh!

@Lollyl88 wow well done for persevering! I'm not sure I am as strong as you to put up with it... the alternative (without coil) is v heavy periods every 3 weeks... being a woman is such a joy!
Keep me posted on how it goes, I hope things settle down soon xx
