Mirena- bleeding after 2 years ?cause

Awaitingtherapture · 10/01/2025 08:43

Has anybody else had experience of abnormal bleeding with a Mirena IUS?
For background I had it inserted for heavy menstrual bleeding. Took one year for bleeding to settle, 9 months of minimal bleeding then daily bleeding since September. It’s a nuisance!
Am waiting for scan and referral to gynaecology but just interested to hear personal experience.
Thank you

Hi Op,

I am experiencing the same and just called the docs to be triaged.

I have had Mirena for 2 years and it's been mostly fine - lighter periods etc.

In the last 6 months I have had 3 periods that last 6 weeks or longer and it's exhausting me.
Currently on Day 17 of a bleed and it's got really heavy in the last 3 days so I've called the docs as it's scaring me.

Did you get an appointment yet?

Hi @GoodLaudanum thank you for sharing your situation. Did you get any help from your GP?
After a one month wait I had the TV pelvic scan yesterday. Although not seen a report, the sonographer said that I have adenomyosis and a cyst on one ovary. She said scan of cyst would be repeated in 3 months. Back to waiting for GP to follow up results and decide whether to refer me to gynae. It’s such a lark 😬

I had the mirena coil fitted for 1 year & then had it removed as I really didn't like it. I had it fitted to help with heavy bleeding but I bled every single day for a year. Had scans & biopsy & apart from a few fibroids, everything else was ok. I've been on a waiting list for over 12 months to see a consultant for either surgical ablation or hysterectomy, so until then, I'm just putting up with the heavy bleeding & being anaemic.

@Curioustoknow1 the waiting makes it all the more difficult doesn’t it as we just put up with the symptoms month in and month out. How are you managing a whole year of this bleeding? Can your GP bump you up the list somehow? Sorry to hear about your experience x

Exactly the same! Insetted for heavy bleeding, 2 blissful years of no bleeding only for it to start again (but not heavy) and mild abdominal discomfort.

blood test showed no issues, waiting scan

@Awaitingtherapture waiting certainly does make things worse doesn't it! As long as I know there isn't anything sinister, I just put up with it, I lost my mom to ovarian cancer so i'm very paranoid about any health conditions!
It's very hard though, on my heaviest days, I struggle to leave the house, or if I'm at work, I can't move from my chair as it literally floods. Very embarrassing! I'm due for another blood test soon as my iron is constantly very low, hoping the results from the next test will get things moving again!

Good luck, hopefully if you're referred, gynaecology will be able to do some scans/ tests & you'll get some answers.

Came on here looking for similar experiences.

I’ve had my mirena for 2 years now and it’s still not settled.

My issue is prolonged spotting for weeks at a time and follows no pattern or cycle

In December I thought it has settled as I only spotted a few days

but now im on day 11 of spotting, stopped yesterday and now tonight I’m cramping and spotting again.

my skin is also getting really spotty and I’ve never had bad skin x

GoodLaudanum · 21/01/2025 21:15

Hi @Awaitingtherapture, yes the doc called me back and booked me for a blood test, to see the nurse for a coil check and sending referral for a scan.

Still bleeding day 21.

Just so exhausted all the time which is making full time work and home keeping such a chore. I sleep all weekend at the moment.

Sorry to hear you have adenomyosis and a cyst. 3 months seems a long time to wait if you are still bleeding. Hopefully GP will suggest something to stop the bleeding in the meantime. Gynae referral will surely be a certainty now I would have thought.

I feel you!

I been putting up with bleeding between periods/a lot for the last 5 years.

two years with the “magic coil” and I’m still having problems.

im mid 30s and sad I’ve got to put up with this.

ive been waiting for an ablation for 7 months, even though online it says my local area waiting lists for non urgent gynae surgery is 18 weeks!
