Thrush but deep inside - possible?

I'm a little scared. I'm 54 and went to the Drs today with a suspected UTI which is had since 18th of December which just wasn't shifting. but after a few tests it's not that. She said she'd take some swabs etc and she did an internal one. It didn't hurt by the opening but deep inside it hurt quite a bit.

I got it 2-3 after my boyfriend and I last were intimate and the Dr said chances are it's thrush but I've NEVER had thrush that was just deep inside and not on the outside. Is this possible? I'm so scared. Have any of you ever had this? I'll know Wednesday of the results.

Try not to worry too much! This has come on after a known event (sex) and chances are it's either thrush, cystitis (not always picked up if it's not bacterial) or just basically your fanny protesting because of your age. I'm 53 and Christ, the things I find myself doing to keep my vag happy are never ending

Are you menopausal? This could just as likely be irritation caused by dryness. Do you use vaginal oestrogen? I use it pre-emptively

At this age the slightest thing can distress the vagina! Things become much more delicate and prone to damage or just dryness causing discomfort so don't panic - the gp should definitely be talking to you about topical oestrogen if there are problems in that zone at your age. Very common (in the nicest sense!)

Thank you both.
I meant to say by intimate it wasn't full penetrative sex just hands/fingers (sorry, Not sure how far I can go on here). My partner was with me because I was worried. The doctor took me into the examination room and hinted at an STI and had we had other partners. My partner and I look after my mother whose bed ridden and we literally spend 24/7 together (which we both like). Last time we weren't together/one of us went out alone I went Christmas shopping in November.

I don't use anything tbh. Since menopause my vagina has been quite calm lol beforehand it was awful. Never regular periods but they could be painful etc. I am hoping it's something like that. Most of my symptoms don't match cervical cancer but match kidney infection perfectly.

My friend has said it's possible to still have a UTI/Kidney infection without it showing up in strip tests so I'm hoping it's that? I am scared though.

Thank you for the replies.

Try not to worry, so much weird stuff happens to our bodies at this age, and genitourinary problems are very common and usually respond very well to locally applied hormones. Hope you feel better soon and get helpful info x

As a pp mentioned, most likely cause is a little bit of dryness which can be easily remedied by using some topical oestrogen. Ask your GP for Ovestin cream and or Vagifem, hopefully that will help.

AnnaMagnani · 06/01/2025 17:58

54? Are you already using vaginal oestrogen? If not, then it's time.

Without oestrogen our vaginas get miserable, start being itchy, dry, sex being painful, more prone to thrush and UTIs.

I hope so. I just have quite a few other symptoms which I'm not sure goes with that. Vomiting, tiredness, brain fog etc. :( fingers crossed though
Thank you x

Yes very possible. I frequently get thrush that has no discharge even or itch!! But swabs said thrush and the tablet knocked it on the head. My thrush symptoms are all urinary so sore when peeing and after peeing and a heavy feeling in vagina. Wasn’t until a camera in my bladder showed no issues that vaginal swabs showed it was thrush all along!

Thank you ALL who replied.
I got the results back today. All bloods and urine was clear but I do have thrush and my infection markers are slightly raised. She says in her opinion I also have one of the many virial infections that are going around at the moment. I am SO relieved!!!!
