Stomach pain, burning, nausea, weight loss

Alex123455 · 03/01/2025 13:45

I’m at a loss to what this could be, all help appreciated. Ive had stomach issues for months now, mainly started with diarrhoea and weightloss, which I originally put down to anxiety 8 months ago.
The last 5 weeks I have had constant stomach pain, especially an awful burning feeling in my upper stomach.
there doesn’t seem to be any pattern, time of day, or foods which makes it worse. It’s there in the morning when my tummy is empty, but I also feel like it gets worse after food.
it spreads to my lower back, and feels like bad period pains, enough to have to use a hot water bottle. I’ve had post nasal drip for months too, which I take Omeprazole and gaviscon advance for.
i keep feeling really sick, mainly before bedtime, which I take anti sickness tablets for.
I’ve lost 3.5 stone in total, one third of my body weight. I look really Ill.
I’ve also never fainted in my life, but I’ve fainted 3 times in 3 weeks. I’m having a 48 hour ecg next week.
The last month I’ve rung one ambulance, one a&e trip, 3 different blood test appointments, and 3 doctors appointments.
The past month I’ve had:
stool samples: normal
stool samples to check for blood: normal
blood tests: all Normal apart from low folate
H. pylori test: negative
i had a CT scan Christmas Eve: came back normal. This was done without contrast though, as I had a panic attack about them putting the dye in my veins, even though my doctor gave me diazapm for it. So I don’t know how accurate this would be without contrast?

This has completely stopped my life and everyone around me, as I have an almost 2 year old that most days I feel too poorly to look after.
Any ideas what this could be?
I was sure it was H. Pylori after reading it up on it, but came back this morning negative.
Do you think an ultrasound would be a good idea?

I can’t carry on living like this, and it has to be something xx

I can’t carry on like this, I feel weaker and weaker and losing more weight. I’m also getting very anxious. The a&e doctor did my bmi which was 14.

I am sleeping 9 hours a night, drinking lots of water, eating food daily. But I am so tired and nauseous all the time, and would happily sleep all day if I could.
The burning feeling in my stomach is really bad sometimes, and it doesn’t matter what I do to try and help it.

Could be a stomach ulcer, I have similar symptoms and tested negative for h-pylori too, it's rare but about 10% of ulcers aren't related to the bacteria. Have you had an endoscopy? That's what found mine.

Msmoonpie · 03/01/2025 13:57

With those symptoms I and shocked you haven’t been referred for an urgent gastroscopy.

Go back to your GP and insist.

Msmoonpie · 03/01/2025 13:59

Also did you stop your Omeprazole 2 weeks before the H pylori test ? This is to ensure you don’t get a false negative.

Sunshineandrainbow · 03/01/2025 14:03

Sounds awful, maybe push for a gastro referral

Must be so difficult to look after a 2 year old

Are you eating less to justify the weigh loss?

Alex123455 · 03/01/2025 15:33

Yes I had to stop the Omeprazole for 14 days, he put me on something else instead for the two weeks. I heard back from the doctors this morning and it isn’t H. pylori.

Tbf my doctor has been pretty good. I went to him a month ago when all this stomach pain/ burning/ nausea started and he did take me seriously. He could also see how underweight i am.
He ordered full blood tests, 3 stool samples, one of which was a FIT test to check for blood in stool, and an urgent CT scan under 2 week wait.
none of which showed anything (I’m annoyed at myself for not having proper CT scan with contrast but I just couldn’t do it)

i feel like because those results all came back ok, especially the stool samples, he’s relaxed about it all now!

Does anyone know if Gastroscopy / endoscopy could be done under G/A if I was to pay/ go private for it?
Im aware this is doable with just sedation. But I need to be realistic, I wouldn’t be able to do it. I wouldn’t even get in the room.
I couldn’t even have a bloody CT scan because of my panic attacks.
Do you think this is something they would do, and how would I go about it?

I don't know if they would but it's definitely worth asking. I would want them to rule out pancreas issues as well - did the CT scan do this?
You need an urgent referral to a gastro consultant. They can do gastroscopy and colonoscopy under sedation but I don't think they will do it under a general as you need to be able to breathe for yourself for the gastroscopy. I had this recently under sedation and don't remember a thing. I may as well have been under anaesthetic.

Alex123455 · 03/01/2025 15:42

He also did a quick referral for the 48 hour ECG, as he agreed the sudden fainting wasn’t normal.
i went back to him on Monday this week, as I had been really poorly over the weekend, and had another fainting spell. He said let’s see what the H. Pylori, CT scan and ECG results come back as and we’ll go from there. But I’ve now had 2 of those results back and both are normal.

Oh I didn’t realise that about needing to be able to breathe for yourself, they probably won’t then will they, even if I did find the money from somewhere 😞

The CT would have shown pancreas, as it was pelvic, stomach and chest. But like I said, how accurate would this be without the dye?! 🙁
would an ultrasound show pancreas I wonder

You poor thing OP, do you have diarrhea or signs of malabsorption?

BMI of 14 is very serious malnutrition territory, agree with needing a gastro consultant and possibly admission for ? Nutrition support?

Godfreydahling · 03/01/2025 15:51

It's worth going back to the GP and asking about the accuracy of the CT without contrast. Ask him something like "can you be sure that all pancreas issues are ruled out on the basis of the CT scan without contrast?".

Also ask about urgent referral to gastro consultant. I was anxious about the gastroscopy/colonoscopy but was more anxious about finding out what was wrong with me and that motivated me to push through the anxiety and just do it. I had a moment just before they gave me the sedation where I wanted to run out of the room but I made myself stay and honestly I don't remember anything after they put the sedation in, they use the good drugs!!

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2025 16:00

Have you not even just had a normal scan? This sounds like gallstones, potentially.

mumda · 03/01/2025 16:18

How much are you drinking and eating?
Does food make it worse?

Yes it can - you can have propofol sedation by an anaesthetist.

Make sure you confirm this upfront. Don’t let anyone bully you into having it any other way if this is what you want.

If you are near London I can recommend somewhere.
