I am 43. Currently not using contraception. I am not wanting any children (already a mum) husband is 49. I know i am starting with peri menopause symptoms, so wondering if the pill messes hormones up at this stage in life?

Sorry, it’s not clear, are you on the pill or thinking of going on it?

I’m the same age and take it with no problems. Apparently these days it’s safe until you’re around 50 as long as you have healthy BMI, appropriate blood pressure, non smoker and no other risk factors eg blood clots.

Have a chat with your GP. Do your research about which type you want. I was automatically given Microgynon at first (I think that’s the standard one given out) but I later asked for Yasmin as I wanted an anti-androgen one to help with spots and reduce facial hair.

Going on a combined pill can help perimenopausal symptoms for many women. Its not safe for everyone and certainly not all women through their 40s so you need a proper assessment with a health care professional.

Do you want to get pregnant?
