I'm female and had a biopsy in the perineal region on Tuesday. It's feeling better (was very sore the first day) but I'm just wondering how long I should avoid intercourse for?

How long does it take for wounds to fully close up?

I've been prescribed a course of penicillin due to the high risk of infection and the fact that I don't have a spleen.

I forgot to ask at the appt. The consultant just said to bathe in salt water each night for a few days

Hi OP

We're just moving this over to women's health for you, as we're hopeful that you'll get some good advice over there. Flowers

I would wait for it to fully heal OP, could be anywhere between 2 to 4 weeks.

Hi there! I'm a women's health nurse. It depends on the biopsy type and depth but normally we do punch biopsies for vulvar skin conditions and normally say that it can take 7-14 days for healing. We recommend women can return to sexual intercourse when they feel comfortable doing so (but to wait at least 7 days after the biopsy).
If you are at a higher risk for infection, I'd recommend waiting until the skin has closed.

Best of luck in your recovery.

@LemonPeonies @DailySnail

Thanks both. It was for what we thought is an anal skin tag. They've sent it off coz they are unsure if it's precancerous. She showed me after and it was maybe the size of a baby tooth? It's about 1-2mm away from the back passage in the perineal region if that makes a difference?

How do I know when it's fully healed?

It happened on Tuesday and the penicillin course ends on Sunday (prescribed as full dose but more to prevent because I don't have my spleen)

I'm having salt baths every night and pouring warm water (using a jug) after using the bathroom for both a wee and emptying Bowels

It's been more painful than the consultant sort of said it would be. She said she removed a decent chunk so they had a decent sample and she didn't stitch it as I have issues with keloid scarring.

I'm dreading the actual removal 😒 and can't decide whether it's just painful because of how deep she went for the biopsy and because she didn't stitch it..
