Fractured Sacrum

Hi all

I fell off a horse 5 weeks ago at high speed and from quite a height. Turns out I have a vertical fracture of the sacrum. It’s so painful and I can’t hobble for more than 5 minutes without ensuring incredible back and hip pain. Has anyone had this or a fracture to the pelvis ? When will I be able to walk unaided and without pain again? Let alone run or take part in sports.

I have had MRIs and CTs which reveal no surgery is needed as healing is starting.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

It's going to take a long time before you're pain free, I think. You'll probably have damaged the pelvic ligature too and soft tissues can take much longer than bone to heal.

I've had similar...no break confirmed suspected and its the worst injury I've ever had (I've had a few). Rest as much you need in the first couple of months, bone healing takes a lot of energy.

Keep your diet nutritious to support your body as it heals and when you're able to, start physio. I didn't get proper treatment at the start and suffered for a few years, getting private pilates instruction worked a miracle so I highly recommend it later on and I can now walk etc without pain.

Physio and pilates is also essential for the rest of your body, you've injured your core so your core muscles will be affected, and your shoulders/knees may start to overcompensate.

You've got a diagnosis, treatment should follow - be patient and try not to let it get you down in the meantime, you will recover !

Oh gosh no! I’m really scared to do anything right now knowing I’ve got quite a significant fracture but I am determined to move my body again but not having any time lines I’m also hesitant at causing further injury!

I've fractured my sacrum three times and my spine once. Both took a few months to feel better.

During this time did you ever get a heavy feeling in your uterus/pelvic area? I have had this for a week now and its been 7 weeks since my fracture.

I fractured my sacrum falling down the stairs. I’d say mine took around 6 months. Although I was able to walk. Albeit carefully and no big hikes.

My friend fractured the pelvis in two places recently. Apparently it frequently breaks in two places because of the shape. But this wasn't a part that weight bears. So they didn't really hardly notice it amongst their other injuries. Are you using any mobility aids? I'd hope within a couple of months you'd be moving easier and more normal.
