Hair and iron deficiency

Horrendous periods for 5 years due to a fibroid has resulted in iron deficiency and wreaked havoc on my hair. Thinner, weaker, etc.
I have been supplementing on and off for the last few years but doesn’t really do anything to improve the situation. It’s like trying to fill a bath tub without a plug!
At worst 1.5 years ago my ferritin was 4 and my hemoglobin was 98. Today my ferritin is 23 and my hemoglobin in is 125. Im always told to take iron- dr never says what kind or how much. So frustrating.
Im 52….. periods are thankfully slowing down the last couple of months. Further apart and lighter than what has been a crime scene situation every 20-25 days.
Anyine have any improvement with their hair after getting g iron under control?

I suffered with low iron for years, and tablets never helped. Apparently, some people just can not absorb iron from supplements and need to have it from food. Which I did not know for 20 years. In the end I had to listen to my granny, and now I eat beef liver twice a week and red meat most days. My iron is fine now.
Another thing I recently learned is that the contraceptive pill actually impacts nutrient uptake, and if you lack the right vitamins the body can't process iron from the diet. (Here is the citation if anyone wants to follow up Palmery M, Saraceno A, Vaiarelli A, Carlomagno G. Oral contraceptives and changes in nutritional requirements. Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2013 Jul;17(13):1804-13. PMID: 23852908.)
Not an issue for me now, but would have been nice to know when I was in my twenties.

I don't really notice my hair, but sorting out my iron and B12 levels has had a great impact on sleep, attention and energy.
