Hi all, have had a year of irregular periods either long or short. In the last 3 months have spotted lightly mid cycle for 3-7 days. Went to Gp yesterday, internal exam, all fine, she doesn’t think it’s menopausal and referred me for a scan. When I asked what could it be Polyps and cancer mentioned. I’m 48, have no other symptoms, not overweight, exercise 5x week, obviously the latter was not what I was expecting.
I’ve had a pretty crappy night’s sleep and I just wondered if anyone else had been in this situation and what to expect next. Thanks

At 48 I’d guess you’re perimenopausal, so the spotting would be part of that.
Have you looked at the many symptoms of peri to see if you tick any off?

Really surprised at this. Surely at 48 you're perimenopausal or menopausal?!?

Also mid cycle spotting is super common. My GP described it as 'boringly normal' and said she would be concerned about other times, always/often after sex and heavier bleeding. If it's regular mid-cycle bleeding then likely hormonal - at ovulation time.

There’s numerous possibilities for what could be going on and a lot of them are not particularly concerning. Your GP had taken the changes to your cycle seriously and has referred you for a scan. I would try to relax as much as possible (even though I know it’s not always easy). Good luck with the scan and the results.

Could also be fibroids

The average age for the menopause is 51 so you’re not far off it. What age was your mum when she went through it?

Givesomeoneyoursmile · 22/10/2024 12:48

Thanks all, for sure I’ll be perimenopausal that’s a given with my age. GPs position was the bleeding was not something she would attribute to menopause. I have no other symptoms of the menopause.

But the year of irregular periods and spotting are symptoms of peri.
