Continuous spotting on contraceptive pill

I'm at a loss of what to do. I've been on the contraceptive pill for 20 years (except to have babies) and I've never had an issue with it. For the past year I've had random spotting with it. Last month I had an ultrasound to check and all came back clear. The GP switched my pill to see if that would help, last month I only spotted for 3 days, but since my withdrawal bleed finished I've not stopped spotting for 12 days! It's really getting me down and I just don't understand.

I'm on the pill to help with extremely heavy periods. Would it be the pill causing the spotting? I don't want to come off the pill and have awful periods again. The GP also mentioned the mirena, but if the pill is causing the spotting, won't the mirena do too?

I get continuous spotting with progesterone only pills.

I'm about to try the Mirena as doc thinks it's unlikely to not have the same side effects as the progesterone is localised.

I tried the mini pill and it was horrendous. But I’ve never had anything like this one the combined pill except when running too many packs together.
