Mirena side effects ?

LostittoBostik · 05/10/2024 03:13

This week I had a hysteroscopy to remove a large polyp and a Mirena fitted. Had it under a GA so I know it takes time to feel normal

The cramping has already gone and I have got any fever or pain but I feel really odd. Is this just the settling side effects of the Mirena,

I feel a bit queasy and very jittery, can't sleep properly and odd dreams. Night sweats but no fever.

It really reminds me of how I felt straight after conception when I was pregnant (I'm definitely not,).

Is this just the Mirena? How long will it take to settle ? I hate hormonal contraception but was having life altering flooding periods every 20 days ans had to try something

I think that all sounds more GA related tbh. I had a mirena for about 7 years (I know too long) but the only side effect was bleeding the first couple of months- after that I had no periods at all so it was bloody marvellous! I loved my mirena. I Hope you feel better very soon and it does for you what it did for me.

Sorry can't help you. The only 'side effect' I had/have is no periods! 😀

Should say I haven't got a fever! Have double checked and temp is fine.

Maybe it is GA, but it was a few days ago now. Thought I'd be feeling better by now. Didn't have nausea immediately after (although maybe they gave me some anti nausea meds as I did request them)

I've heard this so many times! Really hope it does work out as the last two years have been messy and hectic trying to manage awful periods.

But in between my periods I felt fine... so I'm not sure it's worth feeling horrific constantly for

That’s not too long, it’s now licensed for 8 years as contraception .

Ugh just been lying here awake, tossing and turning for the last two hours. So fed up.

Probably going to call the nurse to check in today as I didn't think I'd be feeling so bad now

@LostittoBostik ive had crappy dreams since having the mirena put in. It's due to the progesterone. I always had nightmares the week before my period too so it's just the same.

I'm used to it now. Can't remember the last night I had a satisfying dream!

Hope the OP sees this - I’m desperately looking for info on Mirena. I use gel, and had been taking progesterone orally with it. didn’t feel hugely different on it, but one positive effect was no hot flushes and good sleep.
Had it fitted about a month ago, and lots of spotting which I can live with, a virtual pain free period which was wonderful after having very heavy and painful periods that were becoming quite restrictive, BUT, since the first week I’ve been waking at around 4/5am and having awful night sweats - worse than ever!!

Im wondering if it will settle down, whether to swap gel to morning … anything!!

thanks for reading :)

@Beenquee it sounds like you need to increase your oestrogen, that's what impacts the night sweats (I get mine a couple of hours after I fall asleep, or about 4am too).

I thought so too. I had increased from two to four before the coil, and still didn’t see much difference, so went back to two pumps, but since the sweats started I’m back on 4 pumps before bed - but it doesn’t seem to be making a difference.

should I split the dose morning and night, or is it def better sleep wise to have the gel at bedtime, I wonder?
