Hi all, looking for some advice from anyone who has had a coil removed and a new one inserted. When I had mine inserted originally I had severe pain & bleeding for a few months, it's now time to have it replaced if you had that was it any better getting the second one? I am hoping my body will be used to it but wondering if anyone else had pain/bleeding the first time but subsequent times were better?

Hi, I had a few coils fitted in between kids. The last one I had was extremely painful and I actually stopped the doctor halfway and no longer used coils. Definitely ask about the pain if you are worried.

Mine was definitely better the second time around. It was still painful, but I took decent painkillers beforehand and it was bearable. The bleeding only lasted a day compared a few weeks the first time.

Hope it goes well for you.

Ok, so when I had my coil fitted, I had a double G&T half an hour beforehand.

No worse than a smear test for me.

Thank you for the answers, I'm worried about the months of pain/bleeding I had after the first one, did anyone experience that the first time but not the 2nd time?

Yes my second and third were better but still very painful. They can do a local anaesthetic if you ask and definitely take both paracetamol and ibuprofen a hour beforehand. And a stiff drink afterwards!

No significant bleeding for the second/third just some spotting for a few days.

Thank you all,

I had my last one taken out put in then taken out straightaway as dr noticed a polyp, decided looked ok so put back in. It was uncomfortable but fine.

Dr wanted the polyp checked so next day I saw visiting consultant who prodded me again - it was again uncomfortable but fine.

I then had a biopsy in a city hospital a few months later - uncomfortable but ok. Results were clear!!

I’ve had a coil out. No replacement.

I seemed to have a period 48 hours later which resembled the first period after insertion being 9 days long. (unusual for me.) I just bleed/spotted the entire time on the coil, didn’t take periods away until after removal and that first long period afterwards but don’t know if it’s now compensating for 4 months of spotting.
