Hi all, I've just had my smear result back and it says HPV virus detected 😕 it also says there were no abnormal cells and I just need to go back for another smear in 1 years time , has anyone else had this ? I have health anxiety so really worry about things like this so any reassurance that it's nothing to worry about would be great , thank you xx

Op I'm 55 and had the same result. They check after a year to see if its gotten any worse. It can increase the risk of cervical cancer but only slightly x

Me too, I had this the first time this year so will just go again next year. Try not to worry xx

solice84 · 26/07/2024 15:37

It's extremely common
Most people have some strains of HPV

flyinghen · 26/07/2024 15:40

Very common, I've had this a few times now. I had abnormal cells too which ended up being fine. My last 2 were normal so I'm back to normal schedule instead of once a year!

I had this a couple of years ago. I was really shocked especially as I've only ever had one sexual partner but apparently that's nothing to do with it ? how do you suddenly just develop it?

If you've only had one sexual partner then you must have caught it from them
HPV can come and go so if you tested negative and then stayed celibate or didn't change partners it doesn't mean it won't be positive next time as it can lie dormant and flare up .

dementedpixie · 26/07/2024 15:57

Mine came back with hpv detected last year so I've to go back for another one this year too.

Olika · 26/07/2024 15:59

My colposcopy/smear kept coming back with HPV for a few years and last time it had cleared off on its own. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Leafblow · 26/07/2024 16:05

It can sound worrying but it's not a big deal, loads of people have hpv and it doesn't matter. In the majority of cases people don't know they have it and your body clears it on its own. Even when people test positive for hpv, most people will still clear it on their own in a few years.

They only want to check again later to see if you still have the virus because some people who have the virus for multiple years can be at a higher risk of developing other conditions in the future. This is rare and the checks that they are doing are mostly preventative.

The place you are at, with hpv but no abnormal cells is not a worrying place to be, it is likely that nothing will come of it, you just have a very common virus and you will be checked again to make sure everything stays well.

It's so common

More than women will more than likely have it at one point in life than won't. Should clear up OP

PinotPony · 26/07/2024 16:41

It's very common. I've had it. Had a colposcopy and biopsy. Advised to have annual smears. It usually clears in a couple of years.

Thank you all for putting me mind at rest 🙏🥰
