Mirena removal - what happened in the next few weeks?

Hi all

I'm thinking of having my Mirena coil removed because I don't get on with it and I think it may be causing UTIs.

I'm going on holiday soon so I'm wondering whether to delay in case there are any unpleasant effects in the next few weeks after removal. I'm lucky to be able to choose the date as I know some people have struggled to get them removed.

With this in mind, would you be able to share your experiences (good and bad) so I can decide? In the interests of scientific enquiry (sort of...) if nothing notable happened please do post to say that!

Thanks so much in advance!

Nothing

Had my last one removed, had a wee cramp heading back to the car and that was it

LIZS · 16/07/2024 21:50

Me too. Cramp and spotting for a couple of days. It was only a few weeks ago though so not sure if there is further reaction to come,

Spudulike3 · 16/07/2024 22:12

Thanks for your feedback @LIZS and @suki1964. I had heard heavy bleeding either a few days after or at your next period could be a problem but I'm guessing not for you guys?

seriously - nothing

Spudulike3 · 16/07/2024 22:19

1 second of pain when it was being removed and not a bother afterwards.

Ladymuck2022 · 16/07/2024 22:44

Instant relief like I felt I’d won the pools. As someone recovered from spinal surgery the feeling isn’t different.

I haven’t bleed much since seeing that thing enter clinical waste 14:25 I hope Mother Nature knows time is up.

had a joke with the chap at Asda about age and got the train to my home town.

I had the most awful period of my life a few days are having mine removed. Really painful, flooding and clots as big as my thumb that I could feel coming out of me. A friend of mine experienced similar when she had hers removed so I would advise waiting until after your holiday.

Incakewetrust · 16/07/2024 23:17

A bit crampy on the day and then had a two week period. Honestly was all manageable though but maybe wait til you come back.

Figment1982 · 16/07/2024 23:19

Nothing at all and no change to my periods afterwards.

shellyleppard · 16/07/2024 23:20

I had slight cramping after the removal. No period as I went through the menopause whilst the coil was in place. Can you ask at the doctor's/ clinic about potential side effects?? Hugs x

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 16/07/2024 23:43

Not to be a downer on this thread, but if you have a significant vagal nerve response to anything that happens to your cervix then maybe expect to be a bit faint/nauseous for a few days? you'll know if you do as it will have been an issue when it was inserted/any smear test youve had.

I also had to wait a LONG time for my periods to go back to normal after mirena removal (like over a year)

DramaAlpaca · 16/07/2024 23:54

Not a thing. It didn't hurt coming out and I realised I was out the other side of the menopause because I never got another period.

Spudulike3 · 17/07/2024 06:06

@Littlepinkstarsbyradish sounds nasty. Had it in when under general anaesthetic so not sure about that. I'm OK with smears though.

I had mine removed to try and get pregnant. I experienced a few mild cramps on the day but nothing unmanageable. My period returned on within 3 days and I was pregnant within 4 weeks.

Spudulike3 · 17/07/2024 06:53

@triceratops18 Congratulations on your pregnancy - that was quick work!
