Can hormonal breast pain really be this bad??

A few months ago I starting getting breast pain (just left side) that starts around a week before my period and then goes when my period starts. It feels like a stabbing/burning across the top of the breast and on the outer side, and at it's worse can be excruciating. Ibuprofen/paracetamol help a little, some of the time. There's no lumps or anything, not that I can feel anyway.
I'm waiting on a GP appointment at the moment. Just wanted to see if anyone had experienced this and it was 'just' hormonal? The rational side of me thinks it must be this because of the timing and my age - I'm 44 so hormones likely all over the place . But because it's only on one side and because the pain can be SO bad, there's a niggling worry that it's something more sinister.

It could just be hormonal. It could also just be a result of injury or sprain elsewhere such as neck or back. Breast pain alone is unlikely to be anything more sinister. Your GP presumably is aware that you are seeing them due to breast pain? GP's are, in my experience, very quick to react if they think it could be anything serious even if they have just spoken to you over the phone. Have a look at the NHS website, lots of advice on different causes for breast pain: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/breast-pain/

Breast pain

Find out about breast pain and what can cause it. It's usually linked to periods but can also be caused by injury, infection and taking certain medicines.

I have very similar symptoms, which seem to be getting worse throughout my forties. Also have a lump, so have had an ultrasound/biopsy/mammogram, with the end result being told the pain is 'just' hormonal. Definitely worth getting the GP to check, and if you find anything that helps I'd be interested to hear! I tried high dose oil of evening primrose supplements but it didn't seem to make any difference for me

Hi there - just wondering how your appointment went as I have very similar symptoms. My dr has given me a full breast examination twice but my health anxiety is kicking in.

I've been there and like pp, my health anxiety goes through the roof with it. I've had three mammograms as a result but theres def no lumps.
