Mirena coil and bleeding

Hi everyone! I would appreciate any experiences or insight anyone can give here because I’m a bit worried. Sorry if the word mirena autocorrects because it seems to want to be anything except the right word. Also sorry for the TMI/descriptions if it’s too much.
I had a mirena coil fitted after my child was born so about 18 months ago. I hadn’t had a period since before pregnancy and I am still breastfeeding.
After the coil was fitted, everything was fine and I havn’t had any bleeding or periods…
Until yesterday when I noticed pink blood when I wipe, in my discharge. Not enough to go into the toilet. There have also been a few small clots of pink/white tissue when wiping, about 1cm long and about the width of a piece of spaghetti. I also feel a little itchy/irritated down there.
I obviously don’t have a cycle because of the coil so I can’t say if it’s a period. The internet says that you shouldn’t get any bleeding after the initial insertion on and off like this. I have done a pregnancy test which was negative.
Has this happened to anyone else? I would hate to bother the doctor on Monday and they say ‘it’s probably a period’ or something else silly.
I’m also worried because I had a lletz procedure in 2022, my next smear came back fine but still worried about my cervix.
Thanks in advance!

I think it sounds a bit like what I get. I go through phases with no bleeding at all, then very slight bleeding for a week or so, then about once a year a light period. I’ve had a scan to check my lining which was fine. The doctor said you can still have the odd period/bleeding when using the Mirena even if you haven’t for a while. I’d have a word with the doctors if you’re worried though.

I had a mirena fitted for HRT about 3 years ago but still get the occasional slight PMT symptoms and then a day later a very small pinkish mucus discharge. The other week I had a couple of days of proper red mucus discharge, but still not enough to consider using sanpro.

Your hormone levels will still be going up and down in a cycle even though you don't have a proper period but it may be enough for a small discharge. As geg73 said, you could phone your GP if you are worried. It's worth asking to speak to the menopause specialist at the surgery, if they have one.

I’ve had similar - Levosert (like Mirena) for 2 years. I’ve always had very very light bleeds but last month had a heavy period and since then have had almost constant ovarian twinges and spotting. I had swabs and was put on ABs for suspected BV but I think that was coincidence instead of cause.

Ive got a GP phone call next week and will be referred for an ultrasound I think. I’ve done 3 pregnancy tests which have given me the absolute fear each time, but all negative - but it’s a similar heavy feeling as being pregnant!

I suffer from health anxiety so am battling my brain thinking I have bloody cancer all the time…but it’s way more likely to be a cyst, polyp, endometriosis etc. I think the hormonal coils can increase chance of cysts.

That said, yours sounds more like spotting with no pain/cramps which is totally normal and can fluctuate on the coil.

I have this with my mirena, it's the equivalent of a 'bleed'. Its great!

Hey @User37652 how’s your bleeding now? I have the coil and was breastfeeding and was totally normal and I stopped breastfeeding my daughter last December and have had bleeding pretty much since the odd few weeks with nothing? Due to get it out October but ofcourse my health anxiety plays a massive role, had cervix checked twice and ultra sound and nothing abnormal and smear up to date?
any insight would be appreciated

@Kallie92 hi! I don’t have an answer sorry, I’m going for an ultrasound in 2 weeks, I’m not sure what they’re checking for. I think it could just be my period returning after the baby and breastfeeding. It sounds very similar to you. Hopefully nothing to worry about but I’ll update again when I’ve had the scan x
