PMDD - total hysterectomy

alwaysscared · 08/06/2024 23:27

I had a total hysterectomy on 30th May for PMDD. My consultant also thought my body didn't respond well to progesterone so am only on estrogen patches.

Background, psychiatrist thought I had PMDD (had mental health problems for decades) and referred me to gynae. Gynae agreed and put me on a chemically induced menopause for 18 months (wait time for op)

I didn't see much improvement with the chemical menopause and my consultant thought that was because of the progesterone I had to take to protect my ovaries.

Now I have had my op and am just on the estrogen and I'm still feeling shit. Do I just need to give it time? It's only been just over a week, and I'm obvs still recovering from the op, but I thought my mental health would improve, but it hasn't 😞

My husband is hassling me about trying to find a PMDD specialist to find out if it is normal to feel this way at the beginning.

Does anyone have experience. I'm worried that I have just had major surgery for no reason or benefit! 😫

Hi lovely, can I ask how you are getting on? This is like looking in a mirror for me and am due to see a constultant to discuss full hysterectomy xx

@Singster1986 it's going ok. Mental health still not great but changed HRT to Premarin a few months ago which has improved things a little.
I don't regret having the operation, and it's nice to know that I will have no more periods, no smear tests, I'm in full menopause and that will eventually end, no perimenopause etc.
Good luck with your appointment!

I'm by no means an expert on this but I'm surprised at Premarin as it's one of the oldest products out there (and is the one harvested from pregnant mares (horses)).
There is a forum on the menopause matters website, it might be worth you going there and seeing what's already there/asking questions?
FWIW I still have my uterus etc but did always have awful problems with various Pills and initially HRT, it seems my body cannot tolerate synthetic progesterone products. I had to go with the cap for contraception. Not that I worked out what was the matter until I started HRT, they gave me Elleste Duet and on the progesterone days I became suicidal. I now use oestrogen gel and natural progesterone and am absolutely fine.

My gynaecologist put me on Premarin, in his opinion it's the best. Im doing ok on it but didn't know it came from horses!!

@alwaysscared How are you feeling now? I'm at the same crossroads you were in terms of severe PMDD. I find women either say a hysterectomy was the best thing they ever did, or it didn't solve the PMDD and the ups and downs are still there. I really hope you're doing better.

Thanks @Carrythelight I’m still pretty much the same. Have had some relief from the HRT but I’d say that the hysterectomy definitely hasn’t be the cure all I thought it would be. Still glad I had it done though. I hope you are able to find a solution to your PMDD, it is such a horrible condition. Here if you have any questions
