Hi girls, so I had my routine smear test yesterday and the nurse was having a good old look , asking all the same questions any bleeding after sex - no , and discomfort - no
, last period. And she went quiet and was looking for ages and then said has anyone mentioned cervical ectropion to u before I said nope never heard that before , she said well you have that it's quite common and nothing to worry about. And the swab was bloody and I was bleeding after the smear for a little while , still feel strange down there today but better than yesterday. She said it can be down to hormonal changes and it's where cells grow on outside of cervix and that was it. Are there any ladies out there with experience of this , I'm just wandering as I've never bled after sex etc wi the smear have aggravated the symptoms and now I'm thinking am I going to bleed after sex? And I've read this is a symptom but the nurse said if any bleeding or pain during or after sex go to ur doctors? But I'm thinking are they not going to just say symptoms of the ectropion cervix or will they do more tests. I'm just bit confused and not sure what to expect?

I’ve got the same & the same as you, I’ve had no bleeding ever. The Dr scared me to death when I was legs akimbo having my coil fitted. She asked me if I’d ever had surgery or treatment on my cervix as there was something on it. She had a good look & said it was a big ectropian & if it bled to go back as they could refer me to have it cauterised. I’ve never had any issues & when I’ve had a smear recently I told the nurse & she said she could see it & it looked fine.

Thanks for your reply, did you bleed after your smear?

I had the same and received treatment (cauterised) for this. Unlike yourself I always had sore smear tests, bled and had stomach cramps afterwards but the ectropian was never mentioned.

That was up until 2 year's ago when I was changed contraceptive pill due to age and it seemed to flare it up. I was bleeding after sex and getting pain in certain positions (sorry too much information but no other way to put it). I had went to the doctor had the usual stomach press checks and internal then she had mentioned it had been in my notes for over 10 years worth of smear tests so was surprised this was never mentioned to me.

Anyway I was referred for an internal ultrasound to rule anything more sinister out and also referred to gynae, gynae referral took about 8 months for an appointment. Went along they used some sort of silver compound?? And that cauterised it, since then no issues but apparently it can come back and they will just do the same treatment.

Treatment was quick and no more painful than a smear test.

Thanks for your reply. The nurse said its normally down to hormonal changes, I've been on the same pill for the last 8yrs, In the last couple of years I've changed to taking the pill 3 packs back to back then a pill free break as I was getting bad pains that they did ultrasounds/blood tests for and cudnt find the cause so gynae said to do this, and it has actually eased it off on my pill free break and I wasn't having a period either but recently on my pill free break been having a light 2 day period , so maybe it's down to changing how I take the pill? Had my daughter 8yrs ago and had 2 smears before my one yesterday, the first one came back abnormal so had a colscopy and came back fine, but no mention amd any issues with this before. I'm just worried having the smear yesterday has set something off, and I'm gonna start bleeding after sex and things

I had this for a while whilst on the pill. It went on its own after a while and never had it again since. Think it's quite common

Don’t worry about bleeding after sex for now, your smear has triggered the bleeding and probably pain however that usually calms down within a day or two.

I guess I was just lucky that after apparently having this for a good portion of my adult life that it wasn’t triggered but obviously my pill change did trigger it so if you’re noticing your symptoms are less with a break then do what works for you.

Don’t be scared of going back for further treatment if you need to it was honestly painless and really does work. My only regret is that it took me so long to go to the doctors.

Did you change anything for it to go? Or did it just go on its own?

No I didn’t. It’s not been an issue at all.

Hey I’m going through something similar right now what was your end result?

Whatadayyyyyyy · 08/05/2025 19:20

I have this, tho it’s hasn’t gave me any issues. The occasional spotting between periods and usually spot a bit after smears. It did give me a bad bleed during one of my pregnancies but no harm to the baby or pregnancy. Don’t worry!
