Contraceptive Implant - personal experiences of bleeding patterns

Cocopops8 · 21/05/2024 16:59

Hello. My 16 year old daughter had an implant fitted 3 months ago. Since having it inserted, she has bled for 90% of the 3 months. We were forewarned at the time that this could happen and that she should be prepared to commit to giving it a fair trial for 6 months before looking at having it removed - which we both agreed to.

However, we're interested to hear of other people's experience of having the implant as to how many months it took for their periods to settle into a routine and/or reduce in how heavy they bleed?

Any personal experiences at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Totally opposite end of the age spectrum when I had it fitted but only bled very lightly and infrequently

I had one fitted when I was at uni, so not much older than your daughter. From what I remember, I had no bleeding at all for about 18 months. Then I bled basically constantly (only spotting/lightly, admittedly) for about 6 months. They assured me it was still working, but I had it taken out at that point because I was fed up!

Same with first implant, none at all. Second implant coincided with menopause and lots of bleeding, so I had it cut out.

I never bled with the implant

Fudgetheparrot · 21/05/2024 18:55

Nearly constant for the first 6 months, now seem to have a period every 10-14 days and am sick of my life so having it out!

IDontDrinkTea · 21/05/2024 18:57

I had pretty much constant bleeding the whole time it was in. It only stopped when I fell pregnant with it still in my arm 🤦🏼‍♀️

Oh crikey, on the whole it isn't sounding too promising for her. I really feel for her. We've tentatively started looking at alternatives but it's just a minefield knowing which one is going to lessen the frequency of her never-ending periods. Thank you everyone for your replies, we appreciate it.

I'm the complete opposite to everyone else. Had first one put in 5 years ago, never had a single period the whole time. Had it changed when due and again haven't had any bleeding at all

LemonySnickets · 22/05/2024 12:51

I had an implant put in around 17 months ago. I bled for 90% of the first year. The last 7 months the longest I've had between periods is 2 weeks. I can bleed anywhere between 4 and 10 days a time.

I'm 48 though and won't likely need another implant once this one has expired. Prefer it to the pill though.

A third of woman experience heavy bleeding with the implant unfortunately. Taking the oral contraceptive pill with it for a short period of time can help alleviate the bleeding and completely stop it. Not guaranteed but it's an option instead of getting it removed.
