Stopping period for a holiday

Hello, in the last few years, my periods have become heavier than usual, especially in the first couple of days and to be honest, want to avoid it if I can whilst on holiday in the summer.
had anyone ever taken the medication you can take to delay your period? Did it work, was it successful etc etc? Side effects? I was told it’s best to try it on a cycle a few before you need to but just think that would mess up timings and I wouldn’t know to then take the other one. Any advice?

I've used it several times. Norethisterone I think it's called, one tablet 3 times a day, works brilliantly. I've never had any side effects from it, period arrives within 1-3 days of stopping taking it, normal duration and flow in my experience

You can get a prescription for Norethisterone pretty easily through your GP or privately online.
You’ll need to take one, 5mg tablet 3 x a day, starting a few days before your period is due. You will have your period after 2-3 days of stopping taking the tablets.

This medication needs to be avoided if you suffer from liver problems or have a history of breast cancer. Caution also used for patients with asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, migraine or history of depression.
There are side effects. Many people report bloating, mood swings, dizziness, appetite changes, nausea and headache. Some people report weight gain.

The good news is that if you are able to take this medication then it is very effective as long as you take it as and when you should, and you will be able to enjoy your holiday period free.

I've used Norethisterone several times and had no side effects at all. Unfortunately you can't know whether you are going to be one of the people who do have problems so trying it first is a good idea I think.

One time it even managed to keep my period at bay despite me taking it on the day it started (it arrived early). That time I did have light spotting but far better than an actual period.

I used norethisterone several times. It worked well for me.

Period would arrive about 3 or 4 days after stopping it on return and was then very much on the heavy side, but I was used to that as I suffered with severe flooding in the years running up to the menopause.

I now seem to be through the menopause, thankfully, so no longer need this stuff. Fingers crossed 🤞.

Thanks for the replies - great info. I will get in touch with the GP and get some ordered I think. I do have access to a private GP through work so might try them first given how long it takes to access GP usually.

Good luck- I'm in the process of this right now. I decided to take the pills to delay the cycle before holiday instead of taking them while on the holiday itself. So far so good- I took them for about a week, took my last pill Friday and my period is starting today. No side effects so far other than it's left me in a longer holding pattern of that feeling my period is about to start (a bit crampy, full, bloated).

Yes I've taken northisterone three times now and it's worked great, I usually use it to delay my period before I go on holiday so that the next period is due after I'm home , just find that easier than having to take pills on holiday. No side effects, maybe slightly bloated also one time the period after I stopped taking it was longer than normal

mummy2boys53 · 07/05/2024 06:52

Those that have delayed the cycle before going away to avoid taking the tablets whilst on holiday, have you found you have fallen back into a however many day cycle just starting a bit later than usual?!

I can update that delaying my cycle to not have it on my holiday was successful! I'm due to start Wednesday now if my cycle is normal but delayed so will report back.

hinterkitten · 09/06/2024 07:53

My post-holiday period came when expected- it was a little bit lighter and shorter than usual (then again, at 48 I suppose the peri/memo could kick in for me at any point too!)

SkyeB86 · 09/06/2024 07:56

Yes, me and DD(13) took it on our last holiday and it worked fine. Just heavier than usual when period starts but other than that all good
