Coil and BV? But not had sex.

I had the coil fitted a month ago, due to heavy periods. It was recommended that it would help to lessen the blood flow each month.

I've recently been diagnosed with BV, never had it before. Genuinely thought it was something you got having multiple sexual partners, or a new partner at least. I have had neither. Haven't had intercourse whilst I've had it either.

Could the coil have caused this? Had it in nearly a month, BV this week.

Thank you.

Possible explanations for an association between IUD use and BV acquisition include increased anaerobic bacteria in the vagina due to the presence of a string in the vagina or a foreign body in the uterus, or increased volume and duration of menstrual flow in users of the copper IUD.

Are you checking your strings frequently whilst in the shower? I’m guessing that could play a part too being as douching can also cause BV. Fwiw I had BV once, pre coil, never had it after the coil or, touch wood, ever again, despite being married and so having sex.

@ImWatching no I have checked the strings but don't do it all the time. Don't do it in the shower either. Thank you for commenting.

Hi yes the copper IUD is a known risk factor for BV! It's nothing you've done to cause it.

BV is not a sexually transmitted infection. It's the bacteria becoming overgrown and the IUD changes environment which creates an ideal growing ground for BV.

@KennaThomas thank you for that comment, it's appreciated.
