GP made a mistake

A few weeks back I went to GP because I’ve been having some problems with medication. I actually seen an Advanced Nurse who ordered some tests, one of which was CA125 and didn’t say anything about it. Had the test right in the middle of my period which can cause it to be elevated. I had a normal ultrasound in Jan, so when the CA125 came back at 48 the nurse panicked and told me it was protocol to refer to Gynae on a 2WW but I looked up and the rule is to refer IF ultrasound was suggestive of ovarian cancer. So I called the next day and left a message to cancel the referral. I got a snotty message back saying she wouldn’t cancel it and it was up to me if I didn’t bother turning up. So a week later I’m sat there in hospital being told what I already knew, nothing wrong and immediately discharged. They even apologised for wasting my time. While I was there I mentioned that GP had referred me to Gynaecology back in September for irregular periods and said she wanted them to do a hysteroscopy. Hospital asked a few questions and said because scan was normal they wouldn’t do anything and it was most likely the start of menopause. So I went home and cancelled my gynaecology referral online. This week I went back to GP to review medication. The GP started looking on the computer then got quite irritated when she saw that I had canceled the referral and demanded to know why I had cancelled it. Told her about the waste of time 2WW referral and how consultant was satisfied and she made another referral there and then and quite abruptly told me I shouldn’t have cancelled it. So I went home and cancelled the new referral. The following morning I had a phone call from GP DEMANDING to know why I cancelled. I told her the consultant at the hospital was satisfied but she wasn’t satisfied and said she won’t make another referral but will make a note that I’ve gone against her advice! I’m planning on complaining because in all honesty I think she’s more upset about being told she and the nurse was wrong to do the 2WW referral.

I can see how you’re feeling but I can honestly tell you - I do not know any healthcare professional who would be upset about being wrong about a 2WW urgent referral.

However I don’t see why they bothered referring you again if you categorically stated you do not need another referral. It takes up their time which they do not have. As well as this, patient autonomy is key.

Personally I would have just documented AMA and left it at that. As long as you’re aware of the risks etx and competent - it’s totally your decision.

I was even told by the hospital that I didn’t need the other appointment, just feels like she was trying to make a point instead of using common sense.
