Early 40s, period is erratic

I used to have a regular cycle. I was expecting my period for the first week of February but it came on the 27th of January. It was completely out of the blue and I wasn't expecting it. When it came, that would have been a three week cycle and my period was never like that. It was completely unusual.

I had a lot of stree in January. It was intense and there were nights when I didn't sleep, days when I had to keep on going, days when I didn't even eat. It was awful.

I wonder would that have anything to do with it?

After that, I would have expected my next period to be approx 28 days after that. The 26th and the 27th and the 28th of Feb came and went and nothing. We are now in the first week of March and still no period. It really should have arrived by now.

I am definitely not pregnant. 100% because my relationship is sexless.

I'm getting sick of wearing period underwear every day in anticipation of a period arriving and I don't have a huge supply of period underwear. I am anxious that maybe I might get caught out without period underwear or pads some day.

Not sleeping, irregular periods, in your 40s - are you perimenopause?

AttaThat · 05/03/2024 21:20

Not unusual for perimenopause to start making itself known.

Does your period normally start very heavy and sudden? Could you pop clean period knickers in your handbag to switch in the loo if you notice it’s started?

I do usually sleep well but there were two weeks in January where life was an absolute bitch. I think my mother might have the onset of dementia and she was like a toddler having temper tantrums and she was ignoring some important stuff. She's not quite right. But she dumped me into an awful position trying to fix a mess. It was two weeks of hell where I hardly slept. There was a few nights where all I got was an hour or two maximum and the tossing and turning. The sleepless nights has nothing to do with oeri. It was huge stress in my life.
.I do reckon maybe I am peri too.

But this, this is unreal. A period that came a week early at the January and then nothing since then.

I had similar last year following a stressful time. Once life had calmed down a bit my periods went back to normal for about 5 months although I've just had another strange cycle following a smear... 3 weeks long instead of the usual 4. I'm putting it down to age!

SallyWD · 05/03/2024 22:20

It could be stress, it could be perimenopause, it could be both.
My periods started going haywire at 42. Really short or really long cycles, sometimes ridiculously heavy, sometimes light.

I have the same, erratic and heavy periods. I've booked in for the implant to hopefully end them for the next 3 yrs.

Exactly what happened to me. Clockwork periods and then BAM, crazy. Other issues soon followed and it was peri-menopause. I was 40. I highly recommend going to a private peri-menopause/menopause clinic.

Mine started being erratic at 43, finished at 49. Very awkward when you don't know when they are coming, the last one was after 6 months of none, now that did catch me out🙄
I have found in my youth that stress could delay it coming for a couple of weeks but never make it early, i hope your stressful time improves💐

I had a period the first week of January. I would have expected my next period, the first week of February but it came a week early on the 27th of January. That's unusual for me.

There has been nothing since then. I did the calculations and it's been 6 weeks since my last period. I would have expected something even after 4 weeks or even the first week of March but still nothing.

So
3 weeks early,
Then a gap for 6 weeks and counting.

I was very stressed throughout January and it was awful but the stress has minimised now and I had some good patches of time and incidents over February. Even earlier this week, I slept with a kitten and I found that very relaxing. So I am surprised that there's still no period.

I though maybe I would have had a period 2 weeks ago or so because I there was some slight staining on toilet tissue but no period came.
