hi all. need some advice. i have a new partner, and have started having sex recently (it's been about a year since i had sex before this). we spend maybe each third weekend together (when kids etc allow...). we have a lot of sex for two consecutive nights. then the following week i always come down with a UTI and thrush. it's annoying, frustrating, awkward and concerning. is this just because we are new together? too much sex? or should i be worried about incompatibility? i've considered buying antiobiotics etc online and keeping a supply at home as the constant taking samples to the gp is a right faff.
any ideas ladies? advice? sympathy?! thanks.

First off have you done sti tests?
If clear then it's down to the usual stuff I'm sure you already know, wipe front to back, shower before sex , go for a pee straight after , drink lots of water ....
Of course the problem is we can keep ourselves clean as much as we want but we can't really control how clean our sexual partners are unfortunately
Mine knows he's meant to wash his hands before but usually forgets , feels awkward to remind him .

thanks for replying. for various reasons i feel confident it's not an sti, but agree you can't ever be 100% sure....
we always shower together before sex (as part of the 'warm up'), so think we're ok on the hygiene front. i do wonder about whether oral sex has a part to play in this. and i don't consistently pee after sex (because it's a faff to leave the warmth and coziness of the afterglow to pee..).

and i agree with the awkwardness - asking him to essentially dip himself in bleach is likely to be a bit of a mood killer....

Hahahahaha yeah
Sometimes I forget to pee afterwards then convince myself I'm doomed to another uti
I hate them they are awful

If you keep getting it, you definately both need to do an sti/d test ..or at least you do it.. if it comes positive for something he needs to be treated aswell, otherwise you'll take antibiotics after antibiotics, this is ridiculous, and antibiotics cause thrush aswell. Be a smart girl and get tested

If the thrush happens after the antibiotics, they could be the cause. Might help to use condoms, sometimes sperm can disrupt the pH of the vagina causing overgrowth of the wrong kind of bacteria.

Definitely pee after sex, it would be top of the list of advice a urologist would give you. For people with an ongoing problem with uti post sex, they're often advised to take one antibiotic before sex to prevent the uti happening. Your gp may be prepared to prescribe, otherwise ask for referral to urologist. If this continues to be an issue check out hiprex which can be taken all the time, it acidifies the bladder and can prevent utis. It should now be available on nhs. Make sure you keep very well hydrated. Personally I would also treat thrush pre emptively, as soon as weekend of sex is over. A urogynae recommended something called boric acid pessaries to me, which can be less harsh than repeated use of canesten. I had trouble finding them initially, a company called Siaderma make them. I would also look at treating thrush systemically. Read up on taking caprylic acid or oregano capsules orally. A good probiotic is also a good idea. Gut health can be linked to both thrush and utis.

Pee straight after and I also have a quick wash (just jump in the shower and rinse off my bits) and I don’t get thrush anymore. I used to think I should have shares in Canestan.

Definitely pee after sex! And an absolute game changer if you suffer with frequent UTIs is D-Mannose. Can be bought from Amazon, it's amazing stuff. I get the 'nature supplies' one. It will change your life!
