Mirena insertion question

IHateLegDay · 17/02/2024 14:48

Hi,
I had a mirena coil inserted a few years ago under GA whilst having surgery for other things but had it removed in early December due to some issues with my mood on it.
It's now a couple of months later and my periods are back to tsunamis. I'm currently bed ridden because it's so bad so I've decided to get the coil put back in next week.

My question is, if I book to have it on Thursday, my period should be light by then so would they be able to insert it or do I need to be fully off my period?
Also, how painful is it when done awake?

Thanks xx

It can make it easier for them if you are bleeding as the cervix is already open. So that’ll be fine.

The only pain I had was when they sprayed the numbing spray. It went directly on to an ectropian I have on my cervix & it burnt like hell. I swore. Apart from that I didn’t feel a thing. The actual insertion was pain free.

Can be inserted during period so no problem there. I had to stop the GP inserting it due to the pain and was referred to the gynae clinic for a cervical block which I didn't actually need - it was completely painless when inserted by someone who knew what they were doing!

I had in inserted twice. Didn't feel pain, just discomfort. I took ibuprofen 30 minutes beforehand as instructed

I had mine put in at a sexual health clinic. It was absolute agony but for 10 seconds or so, max. After that it's immediately fine.

I was 10wks post partum so might have been a bit more sensitive.

Didn't need pain relief for copper 7, graviguard t or mirena. May have taken paracetamol can't remember. All were relatively pain free and none during a period. Thé mirena didn't settle as I bled for a year so had it removed. Gp said it was probably an infection. Glad to see thé back of it.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.
I think I'm a bit nervous as the removal was quite painful. She kept hitting a nerve so I was getting electric shock pains down my thighs.
I'll make sure to take pain relief half an hour before and I'll double check she has the numbing spray!

I had one inserted nearly a year and a half ago (first one). One valium beforehand, prescribed by GP. Some discomfort rather like a rummagey smear test. Very uncomfortable for a few seconds but bearable. Small bit of cramping afterwards. Not bad at all. Spotting for four months then no more periods which is great.

I've had 4 inserted and two of them were done while I was bleeding, they were significantly less painful.

The most recent was a few weeks ago, the GP just wiped out some of the excess blood from my vagina and cracked on.

Absolutely don't worry about it.

Oh and pain wise, absolutely fine. A bit of toe wiggling to make sure my hips stayed still!
