Large growth on cervix

BettyBoo246 · 31/01/2024 12:57

So today went for my smear. I told the nurse I had a cyst that was found 6 years ago and was sent to gynae at the time who confirmed was a cyst. However the nurse today has said its definitely not a cyst its too big and not sure if polyp either. Her words were it looks like a overhanging bit of skin poking through 😳 (oh and lumpyish cervix which I was told about 10 years ago too)
She has referred me back to gynae. So now I've come home googled my thumbs off, took out life insurance and all but booked my funeral 😁
Anyone have any similar experiences or just words of wisdom to get me out this rabbit hole please ..

It sounds like a cervical ectropion to me (harmless). But try not to worry, hopefully the gynae referral will come through quickly. I know it's much easier said than done though!!

BettyBoo246 · 31/01/2024 13:29

Thanks @BurbageBrook I'm not sure why its got me so worried this time. I think my referral 6 years ago I was fine and didn't feel so anxious.
She asked if I'd had a traumatic birth which I did with my fc 10 years ago but 2nd was pretty straightforward 5 years ago.
I'm not sure if she did it on a 2ww referral or not (I was trying to act nonchalant for some reason!)

Remember she's just a nurse -- not to be rude, I just mean she's not a specialist. A friend of mine was terrified by a GP recently who said her cervix didn't look right and put in an urgent referral but the gynaecology referral was reassuring and it was totally benign. Fingers crossed it's similar for you. So hard not to spiral though, I know.

cheshiregal31 · 31/01/2024 13:55

As the previous poster said she's a nurse not a gyno. I'd be more inclined to believe what they said over her. I've had a cervical ectropion. Mine bleed after sex. I never looked at it but they just froze or burnt it off. Was about a decade ago.
But If it's been there for six years and not given you any issues and surely other nurses would have seen it

BettyBoo246 · 31/01/2024 14:08

I did tell her I am having the copper coil fitted soon and she suggested they possibly wouldn't be able to with the growth being there but gyna would be able to remove it if all was ok. Everytime I go for a smear I'm asked if I've had a traumatic birth cervix must be in a right state

I'm keeping everything crossed 😬

If it was cancer you’d be dead by now.

Also I had a large chunk of my cervix surgically removed due to abnormalities. They insisted on removing it but they tested it afterwards and it was benign. That was over 20 years ago and I’m still fine!

BettyBoo246 · 31/01/2024 14:23

@cheshiregal31 Yep I've had a fair bit of poking and proddding up there as was under fertility clinic for 2nd dc. And last smear the nurse didnt bat much of eyelid to it as I told her gyna had seen it.
I dont bleed after intercourse and cant say its painful. But my periods are light and somewhat irregular due to being on the mini pill

Exactly. I'm sure if it was sinister then the gyno 6 years ago would have said. Well I'd like to think they'd of removed it. And countless other professionals have seen it. And if your cervix has always been lumpy then that's just your norm surely.
I wouldn't see that nurse again. Some get above their stations.
I'd still go to the gyno appointment put your mind at rest.

BettyBoo246 · 31/01/2024 15:23

Thanks @cheshiregal31 thats helped massively 💐

Dh wasn't much use today at all but thats due mainly to his dm passing away 2 years ago with cancer so think thats probably in the back of my head too

IheartNiles · 31/01/2024 18:36

It sounds like a polyp (normally benign, common) but she’s done the right thing referring you to confirm. Hopefully the gynaecologist can do that with a glance but even they remove and send them away and normally do a scan and hysteroscopy to have a good look.

I don’t like the comments on here about nurses, the nurse did the right thing.

BettyBoo246 · 31/01/2024 19:25

Hi @IheartNiles No I am glad she has referred me. She said she has seen many nabathion cysts over the years and really didnt think mine was that. (No puss and not blister like and too big apparently) sounds like its grown since my last smear.
I did ask if it was a polyp but she said she just wasn't sure and best to get it checked.

Just had a call from the doctors to let me know the nurse has referred me as 2ww. I asked if thats routine or if she was concerned with what she found. Receptionist said it just says in notes she was concerned after smear test.
My heads gone again now 😔

Don't worry it's just so you get seen sooner.
I've had it a few times, when I had the ectropion, for a mole, for a breast check and for a head scan. All put on a two week referral and they all came back negative.
It's literally just a just in case. Probably covering their arse.
I completely understand your fears. I've had cbt for severe health anxiety and whilst I still get it it's not as bad.
There's literally a lot of things it could be before anything bad. How would we know we're not drs? You know what I mean. It's hard but if you rationalise it: You've had it six years. How many other professionals have seen it?
When is your appointment?

BettyBoo246 · 01/02/2024 11:23

@cheshiregal31 I keep telling myself its all just procedure and caution but then I just start crying about it all! Its really not like me at all. Now I keep replaying the whole appointment in my head. Would she have told me if she thought it was/could be cancerous?
The drs said I should receive a call from the hospital within the week and then an appointment within another week.
Well I had my tubes flushed 6 years ago and nothing was said then but then again I guess they're not specifically looking at my cervix had a couple of examinations fron gyna at the same time. But these were all 6 years ago. The only recent one is my smear test 3 years ago and nurse confirmed she could see it but I think the fact the gyna had checked it 3 years prior must have been enough for her.
I think I'm mainly concerned as she was adamant it wasn't a cyst and didn't think it looked like a polyp either and if it is cancerous I've had it atleast 6 years.

Sorry for long post. I'm having to convince and reassure dh (he's rubbish with this sort of stuff) when deep down terrified myself

No she's not trained to know that. Is it a prolapse? That hangs down and you can see it

I think that if you've had cancer for the past 6 years then you'd be feeling ill or it would have been picked up on blood tests that I'm sure you've had. Or you'd have other symptoms.
I know it's difficult but try and distract yourself. Put a funny show on.
Just take it step by step. Go to your appointment . Even if he says I'll remove it and send it off then there's still a number of things it could be.
Google never helps anyone

BettyBoo246 · 01/02/2024 13:20

Just had a text through @cheshiregal31 for my gyna appointment. Its on the 12th Feb.

Can you come and stay with me until then please 😆

I did also think of prolapse when she described it as a large hanging bit of skin. Cant tell you how many images of cervix I've looked at over last 24 hours 😂 I'm going to stop now promise.

Thats not too far away. Let us know what they say. Will be thinking of you

BettyBoo246 · 08/02/2024 16:45

Feeling rubbish today 😕
Checked my NHS App and looks like they have had smear test results back that show negative for HPV which I know should be a bit of reassurance but its not.
Only 4 days to go until appointment so not much longer now but I am dreading it.
Have to go on my own too as need dh to pick kids up from school and don't want to have to explain to anyone else.

It really has consumed me.

Flowers and a hand hold from me. You know the appointment is for the best and I know it's difficult to be positive.
Not long now and you'll know what it is Flowers

@BettyBoo246 hi how did your appointment go?

BettyBoo246 · 12/02/2024 17:00

@cheshiregal31 I've just got back. He has told me its all fine! Its a nabathion follicle cyst and wasn't concerned at all.

I could of kissed him 🤣 I still nearly cried just from the relief I think.

Thank you so much for remembering about me x

Fabulous news. I'm so happy for you. Such a relief when you hear it's nothing ♥️
