Anyone had Mirena coil ‘settle’ after 8 months?

Hi all, I’ve had the Mirena coil in for just over 8 months. I’ve had pretty much constant light bleeding for the entire time and Its really getting me down. Just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and if it ever eventually stopped? I’ve had it for Adenomyosis and extremely heavy periods so I want to give it as long as possible but not sure I can cope
with this for the whole time. The alternative is worse as my periods were unbearable so I don’t know what to do!
I’m wondering if I should keep going or go back to the doctors. Thanks in advance!

I had the Mirena coil fitted last June. My periods have been a little lighter but nothing like I'd hoped. Mine are normal periods every 4 weeks. It's not constant however I'd hoped my periods would be super light or stop. In answer to your question, I don't know but I'm hoping they will too.
Have you spoken to your GP/nurse that fitted it?

I haven’t been yet. I’ve just kept hoping and hoping it would stop because I was desperate for it to work. I think that’s going to have to be my next step but I can’t go back to the super heavy periods so I think I need to decide which is worse!
fingers crossed yours stop soon!

i think it was over a year before my bleeding stopped. Had it not been covid times I’d have taken it out

Wilmslowmun · 27/01/2024 19:22

That gives me some hope, I can cope for a few more months!

Bless you - yeah I don't know what's worse. I was told most people on the mirena coil have basically no periods, and that's not been the case for me. Fingers crossed things are still settling and yours settle down soon. X

I have had mine almost 13 months, constantly spotting, the reason it was put in to solve! Wondering if there’s still hope, or it’s ablation time. 😭

@Wilmslowmun Hello. I’m in the same position - 8 months in and still bleeding. Did you have yours out in the end or did you stick with it?

ohyesohyesoh · 21/07/2025 18:05

Took over a year for mine to ‘settle’ even now tho I had a bleed last month & then a random day this month. If I knew what it would be like I wouldn’t have bothered. I think it’s made me out on weight too. I want it taken out but trying get an apt with the dr to discuss is a joke

Actually only around 20% have no periods at all on the Mirena, I wish this myth wasn't peddled as true for everyone as it gives people unrealistic expectations.

But yes, in answer to your question. It took about 10 months for my on and off bleeding to settle down, and then they stopped for about a year. 2 years in, I spot and get some occasional light bleeding but it's far better than the debilitating periods I was having before it got put in.

@ohyesohyesohand @beezlebubnicky thanks both for commenting. The bleeding is so annoying. Tbh I wouldn’t mind a period. It’s the fact I’m bleeding for approx 20 days in a month (albeit light) but very annoying!

Hi, mine did settle in a way. After about 11 months it settled into a ‘normal’ period cycle. Just a lot lighter than I’d had before it. Unfortunately, in January the flooding came back. I ended up getting an ablation and another Mirena fitted in March and I’m still getting very light periods in a ‘normal’ cycle. It’s better than the constant bleeding or flooding though! Fingers crossed you have better luck than me!

Yes, my level of bleeding is dramatically decreased but i do think it’s funny how so many women get told ‘oh, hardly any women bleed once it’s fitted’ it’s a ploy I’m sure !

Doyathinkhesaurus · 21/07/2025 20:37

Yep. It took a long time to settle but it did eventually.
