Desogestrel 75microgram Heavy Bleeding

I Started on Desogestrel 75microgram approx 3 weeks ago, for the purpose of managing heavy periods primarily. Tried another pill earlier in the year but didn’t get on with it. First week was fine and thought great I’ve found one that works. Then for the last two weeks I’ve been bleeding. Started off just spotting and I was thinking that’s fine, I know that’s a common side effect.
but the last 3 days I’ve been bleeding as bad as if not worse than when I have a period, gushing, clots etc.
i have 5 days left of the pack of pills for this month to take but I just want the bleeding to stop. If I carry on until I take the 5 days will I then have another period?
i was going to phone surgery tomorrow for some advice, just wondered if anyone else had experienced this? I knew bleeding / spotting was a side effect but didn’t realise it would be this bad 😢

It might be worth sticking it out for a few weeks to give it a chance to thin the lining of your womb. It is not really possible to know when you will have a period . Long term , obvs, this bleeding pattern isn't sustainable but it might settle somewhat ( or even a lot) over a few weeks to give you some breathing room

You dont have a break after the pack finishes so no it doesnt mean you will get period then..but on those pills bleeding is really unpredictable... up to you if u wanna try it out but give it at least 3 months

I'm on this pill, I have peaks and troughs with it and bleeding. I can go 3 months with no bleed at all then spend 4 weeks spotting then bleeding heavily.

I've stuck with it because it's been the best for my moods and I was suffering with chronic thrush on the combined.

Maybe stick it out a while longer then if it carries on try another.

I'm on a double dose of this while I wait for Endo surgery to "help my body have a break" according to my surgeon. It's awful. I've been on it 7 months and have been bleeding lightly every single day since. I'm desperate to try something else but have to wait for my next appointment with him. I honestly find this worse than just dealing with my Endo pain...

Progesterone only contraceptive pills are made with different types of progesterone. Desogestrel is one of the most "body identical" progesterones. For lots of ppl it's great but for others (myself included) it can be a nightmare (constant bleeding, low mood etc).
I did a lot of googling and discovered that it's possible to be prescribed progesterone only pills which are made with more synthetic progesterone such as levonorgestrel, which is effectively the opposite of desogestrel.
The brand name of the pill I now use is Norgeston and all side effects including constant bleeding have stopped.
I'd recommend talking to GP about it. Mine didn't believe me at first but it worked so that's all I care about!
Good luck

Thanks for all the replies! Really appreciate hearing your experiences too. I feel so washed out I’m going to stop it and try something else!
