Random extreme heavy period and LARGE clots??? help please

AmberM223 · 28/12/2023 09:31

So the night before xmas eve i randomly started gushing with bright red blood - 12 days early from my due period, it lasted about 30 mins and stopped. Then xmas eve i felt a strange feeling and had passed a super large clot, the size of my hand!! and ever since the blood has been pouring (so sorry for TMI) like it just won’t stop, i’m doubling up on pads, knickers the lot and it’s coming through. I have never in my life had a period like this, the clots are still happening atleast once per hour - also never had them before. I am 28 so have had plenty of periods haha! Also have a 14m old baby - my first thought was miscarage - but did a test and it was negative. So any advise at all please? Not sure if it matters but the blood is bright red and so fresh. And my usual periods are not the same colour? TIA

I would call 111 and ask for advice. It could be a miscarriage or unusual bleeding but you may need to see a GP for medication to stop the flow. When my mother had similar she ended in A&E.

Yes get yourself seen. Coukd be miscarriage but too early for a pregnancy test or could be something else.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 28/12/2023 09:38

Yes I think that sounds like a lot of blood and worth getting checked out medically.

Hellocatshome · 28/12/2023 09:40

Call 111. You need medical advice.

Ostryga · 28/12/2023 09:41

You need to call 111, that’s a lot of blood to lose in a short space of time. Hope everything is ok

AmberM223 · 28/12/2023 09:46

Thanks everyone i will call 111 now, i was in two minds about it thinking they would just say oh it’s an early heavy period and think i was silly but i’ll call now! it is really odd and weirdly i have super super bad cramps usually, like they make me pass out - and i have had NO pain what so ever with this? Just nothing adds up! Thanks everyone i appreciate it

Good luck

First job is get the blood to stop coming. This could become a medical emergency if you don't.

Any Doctor - emergency GP or urgent care (I would call 111 and see what appt you're offered) will prescribe you Tranexamic Acid or something else to slow / stop the bleeding.

Then make sure you get some tests to see what's causing it, so you can address the cause. DSis has fibroids which cause similar bleeding to what you describe - she is awaiting surgery.

Sorethroatandearache · 29/12/2023 21:17

@AmberM223 - hope you are ok now. Any update?

mummymayhem18 · 29/12/2023 21:30

Hope you're ok? Did you see your GP or anything?

Alwaysthesunandthemoon · 29/12/2023 21:33

When I was in a gynae ward for hysterectomy, another patient was admitted via A&E for a blood transfusion following a very heavy period like you describe. You definitely need to be seen urgently.

RedRock41 · 29/12/2023 21:40

Make appt with your GP too. Need to get bloods taken and get to bottom of it as losing so much blood can cause likes of anaemia too which can leave you feeling very unwell if untreated. Sorry this is happening. No fun at all and been there.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 29/12/2023 21:52

You poor woman, yes ring and get some help as it is very worrying and also get bloods done and thyroid and antibodies as could be underactive thyroid as messes with periods and gives extreme heavy bleeding and you need to find the cause of this. Keep us undated and hope you are ok xx

GCAcademic · 30/12/2023 00:38

I was admitted via A&E (where I passed out) to the gynae ward for three days with similar, though I knew the cause (fibroids). I had to be given norethisterone intravenously for the bleeding to stop, the oral tablets didn’t work.

AmberM223 · 30/12/2023 07:38

Thanks so much everyone, i quickly rang the GP first to see if anyone could speak to me before i rang 111 and luckily they did a doctor rang me within 20 mins and prescribed me some oral tablets to slow down the bleeding! so im just currently taking them in hope it will stop and it has slightly slowed and less clots are coming, if it’s still as heavy today im going to go to A&E regardless! The doctor just gave the tablets and wasn’t sure what it actually could be (but it wasn’t my regular doctor either) so when she is back in next week im going to ask for bloods done! Only ever seen blood like it when i gave birth it was shocking!!!😢

Amber sounds awful, I remember waking up one morning and it looked like I was stabbed down below with all the blood gushing out but no blood clots as they must be scary and painful. Don't put up with this as not fair at all and you will be iron deficient. I am having an abalation under general in Jan as 54 and still having periods and sick to death of them as so heavy and takes over your life. Mind yourself and rest up. xx
