Suddenly starting periods on mirena after years with none. Thoughts?

I've had a mirena ( appropriate rreplacements) for the best part of 21 years. I've only had only 3 years without when I was attempting to conceive and when I was pregnant. (In total about 2 5 to 3 years.)
I've never so much as spotted on the mirena however 3 months ago I had a small amount of very dark blood over several days, a month later very light red bleeding and this month heavy flooding.
I know the coil is correctly positioned. I have had both a CT and ultrasound for other reasons and both show it to be correctly positioned so that isn't a concern, but it's only been in for 3 years ish and I'm not sure why I would have started bleeding suddenly when i never have before. Does anyonee have experience of this or any ideas?

Could this be due to peri menopause? I have been on the mini pill for most of my life which stopped my periods completely but have recently had spotting and light periods which I have put down to varying hormone levels as also have several other menopause symptoms.

I'm 48 so the right age but have zero symptoms at all. I don't know if a mirena is affected in this way. It's very disconcerting suddenly to be gushing when I've not bled a drop for years.

Any unexplained bleeding should be checked out. After Christmas, I would get an appointment with the gp.

I would check with your GP. Can you do an “e consult”?

HardcoreLadyType · 23/12/2023 23:14

Oh, and just to really freak you, when I started bleeding on the mirena, it was because I was pregnant. (Hi DC3!)

Well I had a tv ultrasound 3 days ago so very happy that I'm not pregnant but wondering whether to contact the gynae I paid to put the thing in or try the gp. It seems that it isn't a Normal thing then I'm guessing... its certainly annoying suddenly.

I could have written this post myself, I’ve had the Mirena for 23 years, only out for my children and straight back in. I had my most recent one put in in 2021 and this last year I’ve had a darkish bleed lasting a few days every 2.5 months!! I have no idea what is causing it, however I too are peri menopausal

Same, although I have only had mine since Jan. Having bleeds with it, also peri menopausal.

Yep... current mirena has been in for just over 2 years. In February I started having random spotting and bleeding, which has now settled into a roughly 24 day cycle. Mostly light but occasionally heavy. I've had Mirena since 2011 and never bled before.

US scan shows mirena correctly sited and a small fibroid. GP entirely unconcerned, I had to insist on gynaecology referral for unexpected bleeding. That's not until March (been waiting since August).
