Breast infection

A dark shadow came up on my boob and progressed into a red patch with spider veins, and a large lump under the skin. I had it checked today, nurse wasn't sure but prescribed antibiotics for 7 days to see me again on Wednesday next week and will refer to breast clinic if lump or rash still there.

I've never breast fed. Has anyone had this? Is it usual to get an infected breast?

I'm 37, my mum had stage 0(dcis) at 38 and great Gran on same side breast cancer at 40 and died from lung cancer at 48. So bit wary of waiting a week with anti bs and symptoms of inflammatory.

Just looking for any similar stories or experiences of infection? Pic attached, boob has grown bigger than the other. Just had coil out few weeks ago which was in for treating the uterus after fibroid removed

Hi, I'm in a similar position although mine is on the side of my breast tissue near my arm pit.

Large lump under the skin. Red patch over it. It blooming hurts.

I had it checked at the doctors yesterday and she thinks it's an infection/abcess so perscribed a weeks worth of antibiotics (flucoxacillin)

How are you getting on?

@opheliajessie Do you have a temperature/feel generally unwell at all? And did the nurse do bloods to check if your infection markers are raised? I'm not an expert in this area but with your family history I can see why you'd want to err on the side of caution and have this checked at the breast clinic (unless there is a clear indication it's an infection) Hope you get it sorted as soon as possible

I went back on Wednesday and was put through as urgent referral which usually would be two weeks but just got the appointment today and it's for 22nd Jan!! I'm in Scotland so no time promise for urgent referrals, I'm going to phone tomorrow though and ask for cancellation as I don't think can wait that long. I've been looking at spire but unsure of the cost.

The redness was helped by the antibs but it's now a shadow/purple patch and a oblong lump, which is tender when pressed. No sign of fever or anything like that at all.

Your description of it being an oblong purple lump sounds very similar to another MNers picture that I came across today when I was searching old threads for breast/armpit lump stories. Hers was an inflamed cyst. Confirmed and treated.

There's no 'head' on mine at all just a solid sore red lump but after doing a warm compress a few times a day - a tiny bit of pus came out from one of my pores there.

Can you get hold of magnesium sulphate paste? Boots and similar chemists sell it for under a fiver. It's supposed to be great at drawing boils/abcesses to the surface.

It reassured me somewhat to know it's puss inside and not some solid mass(?)

It's worth a try.

It's also a really good sign that the redness was helped by antibiotics.

I'm so sorry you have to wait so long for the breast clinic though 😕

Thank you, I will have a look into it though it I'm not sure anything can be brought to the surface boil or abcess like as it's very much fixed under the skin with just bruising shadow like appearance now. But maybe worth a try,

That's good re the pus likely to be infection then and hopefully it's getting better are you going back in after anti bs are finished?

I know 22nd jan feels so far away.
