Bladder Stents

Anyone had bladder stents?

I'm due to have a radical hysterectomy and other tissues cut away as well as possible colon resection. My surgeon has told me I'll need bladder stents - tubes that run from kidneys to bladder inside or instead of 'ureter' tubes.

I was really hoping rather not as they will drive me mad with anxiety but she has confirmed it must be done. I think they're temporary for 3 - 4 weeks then get removed / unsure.

I have an anxiety disorder very extra specifically OCD about anything being inside my body which is pretty extreme. For example IUD nearly made me go insane, had to get it out urgently, can't have dental implants or dentures etc.

When I read up about stents to try and put my mind at rest, it did the opposite and I'm more terrified - lots of info about pain, discomfort, difficulty urinating, high risk of infection, stent moving / dislocating etc. Anyone had them and it's been OK? or anything to share?

Bumping my own thread - anyone had or got bladder stents?

Am interested in experiences and hopefully a bit of positivity as I 'went there' and read what the peoples of reddit have to say and it wasn't good

Not sure if this is the same as you would be getting but I imagine it would be similar. I have had a uretal stent after having emergency surgery on an impacted kidney stone 2 weeks ago. I was under GA to get the surgery on stone and that’s when they inserted the stent. I was also very anxious about it all and the thought of them leaving a tube in me made me feel sick and I had multiple breakdowns about it prior to op. When I came round I didn’t feel the stent or anything in me as I had imagined I would, I wasn’t sore atall. When I went for my first pee it wasn’t the best but fine- nipped when I urintaed and a little cramp in my kidney when I finished peeing. But it lasted not even a minute. For the next 2 days it was like this bit nippy and crampy at the end of peeing but manageable. After this I didn’t notice any symptoms of the stent really for the further 10 days. I did have blood in my urine throughout which is normal. Today I went in and had it removed and it was so straight forward and took all of 3 minutes- they go up urethra and pull it out… I was so anxious for this and cried my way into the room for it but it was actually nothing to worry about no pain atall. After having it removed I have had maybe half an hour of bad cramps about an hour after removal but so far seems to be fine.

Dear @HannahGr93

Thank you so much for this info as it sounds like what you had is effectively the same treatment I'm getting - a temporary stent. They keep calling it 'bladder stents' which I can't figure out why as it's ureter stents really.

Also likewise it was mentioned that the stents would be removed in due course, ie not permanent and to somehow be pulled out.

I'm reassured by your feedback and I'm gutted for you that it's been making you so distressed prior to the surgery and removal. That's exactly how I feel. I too have been crying with fear.

I'm so terrified of pain / infection / blockage and then I went and read reddit which was the worst thing ever.

Thank you for putting my mind at ease - it's worth a million dollars! I hope your situation is over now and you're not in need of further treatments? :)

Was it ok? I’ve got the same anxiety. Having op to remove giant kidney stone in a few weeks and will have stents in. The thought of having them and removed without anaesthetic is making me weep
