UTI question

I've had a UTI/kidney infection for the last week. Haven't had one for years.

I went to GP on Wednesday and got antibiotics.

They finish in the morning.

It still doesn't feel like it's gone. It doesn't hurt to wee, and I'm not going more often, but the whole area still feels quite sore.

Sort of cross between period pain/IBS and cystitis. All very low down and at the front.

Do I need to go back to GP, or is it just that everything is a bit upset and will settle down.

personally as a uti sufferer i give it a couple of days after the antibiotics finish before going back. Sometimes it woukd settle, sometimes not.

if you are perimenopausal then consider a topical oestrogen cream from the gp, gamechanger for me.

Sometimes you need a very specific antibiotic to get rid of the infection. Might need your urine to be sent to the lab to know which one. I'd check with Gp.

As UTIs are so painful I would immediately ask for a different course of antibiotics or depending on what one it is , they will extend ( sounds like you are on the three day course) to the week. They might use Nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim.

I had nitrofurantin from 111 last weekend but it didn't do much.

Gp prescribed Pivmec something and sent wee off to lap and haven't heard back that they need to change.

I'd follow up with the GP, but also would expect the whole area to feel inflamed for a few days. Has the kidney pain lessened?

fruitstick · 03/12/2023 09:45

Yes kidney pain gone and weeing is now fine.

If you’re still feeling some sort of pain I’d phone the docs and they’ll probably ask for a wee sample to be dropped in and will test it to see if there is any infection. If infection remains they’ll prescribe more antibiotics.
