Awful pain during speculum exam

Has anybody else experienced an extremely painful smear or internal exam using a speculum? I have had smears before and been ok, but I had the most agonising experience today and I don't think I could ever have another one again.

I have had a baby in between exams - could this be why?

Same here, agony for hours as the hospital tried to do a biopsy of the womb lining for erratic periods and an internal, my body just let me down when I thought I had gotten used to smears/trans vaginal scans before at least, then I remembered the hospital uses different speculum to a GP. This thing being used at the hospital was silver not clear (plastic) They said it would have been easier if I'd had a baby but that didn't do anything to stop me from feeling embarrassed.
Perhaps sometimes it is the pressure of the situation, I just couldn't think of anything nice whilst it was going on.

Now they are going to put me out under a general to get a sample of the womb lining and hopefully fit a coil whilst I'm under. I just hope my cervix does dilate whilst under. In another way perhaps it will stop the recall of more frequent smears (I got HPV result last time and recommendation to do a smear 12 monthly instead of 3 yearly)

Then my GP said I can send you to urology who can take a look with a camera up the bladder following some other recent test result, I'm like no thanks let's go with the option of repeating the urine test to see if that's so necessary!

Hope you feel more comfortable soon.

@xmastime23 ask about a different speculum- the usual one feels very painful for me but a Winterton one is OK.
