Smear test

I’m in my mid 30s. My first positive CIN1 ear test was last year. The GP called to tell me at the time and followed up with a letter.

I had a follow up Pap smear recently and was told by the nurse to ring in 2 weeks for the results.

I called today and the receptionist said she’s not trained to give medical results and that I’d have to wait for someone to translate it to layman’s terms and call them back in a few days. She said I’d get a letter in due course too. She then ended with saying if it was something serious the GP would call me.

Is this normal? It made me panic a bit incase it’s something serious and she doesn’t want to say. I’ve never had someone say they can’t give me any results over the phone (not just Pap smears).

It’s very disconcerting but yes, it’s normal. I had the same when I phoned for the results of a biopsy on a polyp. The results didn’t just say “normal”, they were technical and long winded. I had a phone call from the GP 24 hours later, to say all was fine. Try not to worry.

To anyone who sees this- I did get a letter and it was a negative which is fantastic news.
