Mirena Coil - Side Effects?

justdontknow3828 · 27/11/2023 11:10

I'm due to get a Mirena Coil fitted soon. The mini pill, desogestrel, didn't work out for me earlier this year as I took it for less than 2 weeks before I stopped. It gave me bad chest pain and shortness of breath, as well as flashing lights and an increase in blood pressure.

Gynae says I might be hormonally intolerant, but the Mirena has a lower dose of 20mg which goes directly into the uterus so I might not have these issues when it is fitted?

I'm freaking out about getting Mirena fitted because if I get severe issues, I can't just stop it like I did with the pill when I suddenly found I couldn't breathe.

This is all to (maybe) stop extreme heavy and long bleeding/flooding and constant spotting. I'm anaemic and desperate but don't want to make anything worse.

Has anyone had major problems with Mirena?

I can't have anything with progesterone - I tried the mini pill and the mirena. Have you been referred to gyna for ultrasounds to find the source of the heavy bleeding? Or to a haematologist to see if you have a bleeding disorder? Tranexamic acid might help and doesn't affect hormones or mood, and is used for women with bleeding disorders (or endometrial ablation if you're sure you're done having babies).

Hi @justdontknow3828

I am on the second Mirerna coil cause of heavy periods couldn't cope with anymore

Very uncomfortable having this coil insertion but well worth the discomft of this.

hardly bleed that much now

I had horrific side effects with the pill and implant. Had my Mirena for 4 years and love it so much. No periods and no side effects at all. Bloody sore having it put in, but only a few hours of cramps and then maybe 6 weeks of spotting.

I love it! Will be having it replaced until menopause.

There is another coil, sorry can’t remember the name, that I think has less progesterone.

IME Mirena is amazing. No side effects and stops all bleeding. I don't even need sanitary products, bit still feel ovulation. Try to get into a positive mindset about it OP, it could be a game changer for you..

I have issues with every other type of hormonal contraception and am also now on my second Mirena and it's great for me.

Insertion isn't super fun but it's not awful either

Thanks everyone for your replies :)

I've had 2 ultrasounds. They said the lining is very thick so they can't see any problems. I'm taking tranexamic acid 2 pills x 3 times a day. I think it helps a bit but doesn't stop long periods that go on forever. Plus I still have to get up at night every two hours to change pad and tampon on the heaviest days to stop bleeding through everything.

My main fear with the Mirena is not being able to get it out in a hurry if I react badly to it.

I guess I'll have to see how it goes, as I can't keep bleeding like this.

Take a painkiller before insertion.

Had mine out as I thought it was killing libido. Did have a bounce after removal but not sure if it was the real problem. DH said he could feel the strings sometimes and it was a bit irritating.

If you have heavy bleeding I would definitely go for it. Made my periods barely a sneeze first time I had it. Second time I had an annoying week-long brown discharge and then maybe a day or so's bleeding. But still much better than heavy bleeding.
