10 months of spotting with coil

Posted here before but…

Almost ten months of spotting after having the coil fitted… which was advised to help with irregular bleeding/spotting!!
Im also having cramping too which I never used to get.
Im utterly fed up now.
I have a consultant appointment at the end of the month.
Im only 34 so this is annoying.
Does anyone have any positive stories or is this just not going to improve?
Tried the mini pill to help the spotting prior to this and that was even worse.

I had similar op. It did stop eventually. 4 years with no periods now but I am perimenopausal now so that may affect things

I'm assuming you have the Mirena and not the copper coil? I can't reassure you it will stop as I had mine (Mirena) to reduce extremely heavy periods, I was spotting for around a year after insertion I think, but it was preferable to the flooding I had before. I can understand why you're disappointed if it hasn't resolved the issue you had it inserted for though. I suppose there was a chance you'd be one of the women whose periods stopped completely but instead you have spotting which is definitely a thing with the Mirena. In case it is the copper coil, that's known to make periods heavier.

Thank you, Yes it’s the mirena!
I had the copper coil in my early 20s and it was ok. But that was before any of the issues I have now!
i started spotting between periods/bleeding between periods in summer 2020, been back and forward to GP and gynae ever since.
id Had a smear 6 months before which was fine, and I’ve just had one at the start of the year which was fine.
also had an ultrasound and a hysteroscopy & biopsy which was fine.
I can’t understand how someone can bleed so much without it being anything serious!
no explanation given from anyone- just keep trying to stop it x

Going through something similar at the minute and have been red flagged for a gynae appointment under the 2 week pathway. Did you ever get a reason for the bleeding?

@SpillerGlitter I should have said I’d had bleeding issues for four years but the coil for two and nothing is still really sorted x

Sorry to hear you are still suffering. I’m waiting on an internal scan and I’m terrified.

How you doing now @Mrsworried1

Mrsworried1 · 21/08/2025 22:51

@Lucymcr82 hi it didn’t really ever work for
me unfortunately! I ended up having an endometrial ablation and a new coil fitted earlier in the year. I was then hospitalised with a horrific womb infection! Seems to have settled now but I’m still early days xx

Thank you for replying.
i myself have now had the coil 18 months.
3 weeks light period/spotting. 2/3 weeks nothing.
Had a scan yesterday and sonographer said it looks ok but will await full report from doc.
i feel losing the battle and it’s really stressing me out.
would love ablation or the whole thing whipped out!!!
