I had a copper coil fitted yesterday and was VERY nervous. Anyway i am overdue a smear due to been pregnant last year and had to wait. I was that nervous i forgot to ask for a smear! I could kick myself and have not slept! As anyone ever had a smear whilst coil is in place? Im very mad with myself im scared a smear will dislodge the coil or something.

A smear with a coil in place is absolutely fine. Your coil is in your uterus, a smear shouldn't be able to dislodge it! If it could, we certainly wouldn't be able to have sex with one in (which would somewhat defeat the purpose...).

I've had three with a coil in place and there was never an issue. The most it was mentioned was 'I can see your strings so it's still in place'.

I've had smears with my coil in place and it doesn't effect anything :) Its a good opportunity to check the strings are in place (I'm useless at checking mine).

As long as you can feel them you're all good

copper coil fitted 1.5 years ago, regulated my periods (always bang on with the dates) but made them a lot heavier.

I have missed my period by two weeks now, I’ve had spotting and really light bleeding (never had light bleeding, usually straight to heavy). I’ve took a test and it was negative but I just can’t stop thinking about it

My gynae said not to bother checking the strings,if I'm not having periods then it's in the right place! (Mirena not copper of course).

The strings curl up usually.... if you squat it's a bit easier.

No problem with smear,I always tell the nurse tho
