Bleeding on mini pill

Good evening, I was wondering about other’s experiences with mini pill. I was put on it at the end of August to try and deal with endless bleeding as I’m 50 . September I had a bleed due to having a hysteroscopy. It stopped then for the last two weeks, I have had endless brown spotting, it’s really getting me down , I am now wondering if it’s worth continuing with the pill . Any advice or experiences welcome.

The mini pill was hell for me.
I had either continuous spotting or weeks of heavy bleeding. I kept getting told it would settle. It didn’t. After 5 months I was anaemic and so weak I struggled to walk. I refused to continue.
I was the same with Mirena coil too so I’ve no idea why gynae insisted I try it.

@RallyRallyAppreciateIt thank you so much for your answer , I rejected a mire a coil for similar reasons too you.

I think it can take a while to settle but if you can keep on with it a while longer you might be one of the lucky ones (like me) who absolutely loves it. I’ve been on it for 8 years now, no bleeding whatsoever and now I take it as part of my HRT. I think initially it did take a few months for the spotting etc to stop.

Give it a bit longer, I remember having light periods for first few months on the mini pill and then lots of brown discharge and then nothing...no period for 6 years until I decided to come off it to try for a baby.

@Luxell934 , thank you , no periods would be a dream come true for me!

I was put on it to try and help with heavy bleeding caused by fibroids. Instead it made it worse and I bled to some extent every day for 3 months before I decided enough was enough!

SnakeyS · 03/11/2023 11:33

I’m the same. I’ve been on Cerelle for 5 months and the bleeding / brown discharge over the last 2 months in particular has been pretty much continuous.
For those who said give it a while
@Luxell934 @Pigeonqueen how long was it for you to settle down? Cos I’m reaching the end of my tether now!

Toomanysquishmallows · 03/11/2023 12:05

@SnakeyS , I’m the same ! I’m so sick of the brown discharge!

@Toomanysquishmallows I’ve spoken to my GP and I’ve got a scan booked in for the end of Nov. But I’m not sure I can wait til then tbh. I’m seriously thinking of stopping Cerelle and seeing if that sorts it all out.

Luxell934 · 03/11/2023 15:56

I'd give it at least 6 months before you give up. Minimum.

For reference I was on Cerazette, My doctor tried to fob me off with Cerelle and a generic version of cerazette and both didn't work for me.

SnakeyS · 04/11/2023 07:41

Thanks @Luxell934
I’ll persevere and hope it does improve. Out of interest, what do you mean by your Dr trying to fob you off with Cerelle? Is it regarded as crappier than Cerazette?

SquishyGloopyBum · 04/11/2023 08:00

I took it for 9 months - Dr kept just saying it will settle. It didn't.

I then refused the coil as it's the same hormone. They were keen to list the benefits but at nip point did they say a known side effect can be bleeding in women. No way was I going to have one - I knew I'd be fobbed off and asked to let it settle if I did bleed and it's not something I could remove myself.

littlebirdieblu · 04/11/2023 08:13

I'm on cerazette, have been for years. I bled for months on end and was advised by my GP to take 2 every day instead of 1. This worked for me, now I only have a 3-5 day light period every 4-5 months.

Toomanysquishmallows · 04/11/2023 08:29

@Luxell934 , that’s interesting I’m on zelleta , my next packet is generic decogestrel . I’m so fed up with the bleeding at the moment.

I had been on Cerazette and was getting on fine, then when I asked my doctor for another year supply she prescribed me Cerelle. When I questioned it she said they are exactly the same. So I tried Cerelle but it was not the same for me, and I didn't get on with it. I guess Cerelle may be cheaper and thats why she wanted me to have that instead.

Would love to know if your periods stopped, did you stop taking? I’m 6 weeks in and 3 weeks I’ve been bleeding, going on holiday tomorrow I wish I never started taking them! I’m wondering what will happen if I stop? Xx

Toomanysquishmallows · 14/05/2024 07:24

@Amybacks , touch wood , I haven’t had a period since January.

I had the same experience with the mini pill albeit years ago. I stuck with it for about 1 year and the spotting never stopped. They were so surprised (GP and consultant) when I refused to have a Mirena and opted for a copper coil 🙄
