Having the copper coil fitted next week. Just wondering what to expect when I go to have it in?

Hi,

I had my first copper coil fitted back in July and hands down the best decision I ever made! Ignore all the horror stories and don’t google too much into it because it made me so nervous.
I was told to have Co codamol and ibuprofen about 20 mins before that way you’ve got 3 pain reliefs working. Also make sure you have lunch and something to drink! Maybe bring a snack and some water if you usually get a bit dizzy.

I was on my period when I had it done which can sometimes make it easier (however I was at the very end of it). The pain was more like a sharp period cramp which was over in 3 seconds, you probably have about 2 of these whilst they measure and insert. After that it felt like a dull ache. Try to keep talking to the nurses to keep you distracted it really helps.
a few hours after was when it was a LOT more painful, severe cramps as your womb is trying to get rid of the coil but keep taking pain killers and have a water bottle on you constantly, I also found hot showers really helped as you’re not supposed to have a bath.
this intense cramping probably lasted for 3-4 days for me.

I had light spotting for a whole month after which eventually turned into my period and then I stopped spotting. I have very regularly periods now, sometimes I spot about 5-7 days before. My periods can be a bit longer 8-10 days but I think they’re beginning to settle as the months go on.

Best decision I made and if it doesn’t work for you after 3-6 months then you can always get it out!
