Heavy bleeding

I had a baby in November 2021. I struggled to conceive due to PCOS. I got lucky and conceived on the first cycle of clomid. Had a c-section.

I breast fed until around May 2023. My period returned around March of this year. Prior to pregnancy my periods were either non-existent or extremely long. They used to be five days long when they did show up, using two days of heavy bleeding and then it would taper off.

Since they started it has been a different story.

Since July I have had more or less constant bleeding. The bleeding is heavy, in the realms of flooding into clothes or having to use a towel and a tampon or two towels. This has been interspersed with days of heavy bloody discharge, or watery discharge which wipes pink or red, or brown tacky discharge. One period the blood was very dark, almost purple but the most recent period of bleeding it’s red. For two weeks in September I was passing huge clots, some the size of my thumb and much bigger than a 50p. This was after a week of what I thought was spotting or a light period.

I went to the GP who said that she thought it was my hormones settling after breastfeeding. She sent me for an ultrasound to check for fibroids or polyps, this came back clear. My smear is up to date. I’m having bloods done this week. I don’t have any pain particularly, but am so depleted from all of this and a bit bloated.

I am trying to conceive so am using an ovulation monitor. This hasn’t picked up any ovulation for the last three “cycles” but as the bleeding is so frequent I’ve probably not been able to track it effectively.

Just hoping anyone has had any similar experience or whether I should be pushing for any other types of investigations.

Thank you in advance xx

Wait for the blood test results, but check they are testing for thyroid issues.

Being anaemic gives you heavy periods, so I’d get the iron checked with the thyroid.
