Globus sensation

Has anyone every had globus sensation before?(feeling of tight or lump in throat?) I have been going through alot of anxiety recently but I'm freaking out there's something more to this. I've had it for about 3 weeks now but on and off, it's not consistent. It's the left side of my throat just feels like there's a strained muscle that's the only way I can describe it. I'm scared it's like thyroid or throat cancer.

Have you seen a doctor? I'd never heard of it before so googled it and it rang a bell, I think I may have had it from stress years ago.

CourtneyB123 · 21/10/2023 19:20

Hi yes I've had this a few times before. I actually went a&e first time because I thought I had something stuck in my throat! It's horrible. There's lots on YouTube about it which could help ease your mind. When you deal with the anxiety it will go away. It's difficult not to pay it any attention but the more you focus on it the worse it seems to get. I hope you can find some respite from it x

delanew · 21/10/2023 19:39

Do you know it's globus or are you guessing?

I work in the field and to be honest the best thing is to have it checked out.

Globus is caused by anxiety or reflux (or both). If you suffer from reflux get it treated and see if it helps. If you're anxious, the more you worry that something is there, the worse it will get but the best way to check nothing is there is to have it checked by ENT as it's SO hard to tell your mind there's nothing wrong when you aren't completely sure.

I've had globus myself and even with all my knowledge I couldn't shift it until I saw for myself there was genuinely nothing there. The symptoms went within hours after that.

The brain is so weird!

@delanew no I'm just guesssing I haven't had it checked yet. I will go to the Dr's on Monday to see. Hope it's nothing sinister as it's coming and going .

I’ve had something similar - I had an endoscopy and they could find nothing. It went on its own and I’ve only just remembered about it reading this post!

whereisthecheese · 21/10/2023 20:21

I had it in lockdown, GP told me if was very likely anxiety and to use distraction techniques- it went in days after that

neilyoungismyhero · 21/10/2023 20:21

I've had it for about 9 years!
I too was originally worried about cancer and had various tests which all came back negative- thankfully. Its just never gone away and I've learned to live with it. The doctor was really no help once the tests were completed and he kind of lost interest.

Diggersandunicorns · 21/10/2023 20:22

Oh I’m sorry you have this, it’s awful. I’ve had it about three times now. The first was the worst. Was during the pandemic when DC2 wouldn’t sleep. Always worse at night and would keep me up for hours. I can now sort of keep it away if I feel it coming. It’s always when I’m really tired and stressed.

Def get it checked out to make sure that’s what it is. And if it is then get plenty of sleep and try and relax. Easier said than done. Drinking lots of water helped me. The swallowing sensation proved to me there was nothing there.

I've had this and like pp went to a&e as I thought I was having an allergic reaction or something, but the Dr had no idea what it was. It came on just after a really busy period at work but I also had reflux quite badly at the time. It seemed to go away after a couple of weeks of esomeprazole to deal with the reflux.

Hi @Mummabear10032021 do you have any update on this? Experiencing the exact same thing as you! GP app on Monday but it's making me really anxious

Mummabear10032021 · 28/10/2023 20:31

@delanew hey it's actually gone now. Did last a few days. I find it definitely comes on when I'm experiencing a lot of anxiety . Hope you're ok. Are you experiencing any anxiety at the moment ?

How long did yours last? I am experiencing a lot of anxiety but I feel like the feeling is there more than it isn't 😩

MyDogSmellsTerrible · 13/11/2023 19:58

Hi @Mummabear10032021

Can I ask you what it actually felt like? Google says a lump in the throat but I feel like there's a tiny bit of food stuck there. Or a hair or something. Sometimes it feels like it's right at the back of my tongue and other times like it's near my tonsil. It's always on the same side though.

I've had it for about 4 weeks now and it's really annoying me. I don't feel particularly stressed. Quite the opposite actually but it does go away when I'm eating or talking. It's so weird.

Maybaby1994 · 13/11/2023 20:02

Hey @MyDogSmellsTerrible I actually had a ENT app because of mine last week and had a camera put down my nose (not pleasant) and was told it was due to indigestion. I was prescribed omeprazole and gaviscon advanced and it's a lot less noticeable now and some days completely gone!

If it's annoying or worrying you, go to your GP and ask for a referral for reassurance ☺️

MyDogSmellsTerrible · 13/11/2023 20:05

Thanks for that. I'm going to try to make GP appointment on Thursday if I can.

Mine feels more like something very small is at the back of my throat though, like an ulcer of something, even though it doesn't hurt. It actually feels like tonsillitis but without the pain, it's so weird.

Sorry you had to go through that but glad you're doing so well now!

Obviously I've googled it and am panicking that it could be something terrible 😔

Maybaby1994 · 13/11/2023 20:07

@MyDogSmellsTerrible I did exactly the same! My GP said that usually as long as it's not accompanied by any other symptoms, like difficulty swallowing then it's usually nothing to be overly concerned about, but he referred me anyway as I was really anxious over it as well!

Just try not to worry, see your GP and hopefully they can reassure you while you wait for your referral ☺️

MyDogSmellsTerrible · 13/11/2023 20:14

Thank you. I absolutely will make that appointment. It’s a horrible feeling. Not painful but really annoying. I actually thought it was something on the side of my tongue at first, right at the back but I’m just not sure now.

thank you, I’m glad you’re ok now :)

MyDogSmellsTerrible · 13/11/2023 20:33

It doesn't help that my best friend was diagnosed with tongue cancer a couple of years ago and had to have a large part of it removed 😞

rainbow616 · 13/11/2023 21:33

Omeprazole got rid of the sensation for me!

Emmylou2202 · 30/01/2024 10:06

@Mummabear10032021 @MyDogSmellsTerrible @Maybaby1994 hi all, please can you let me know what happened with this in the end. I have had this for over a week now. Tried over the counter meds for heartburn the last couple of days no luck yet. Mine is also causing me to really salivate because of the lump in throat feeling. Did anyone else have this? I’m really worried as well. Thanks
