“Community dermatology appointment”

Maybemaybenot76 · 20/10/2023 15:35

Having visited my GP 2 months ago regarding some suspicious lesions, I was referred to the “community dermatology team.”

After my appointment today I discovered that the doctor I saw is not actually a dermatology consultant, but a GP that has completed a dermascope course And has a special interest in dermatology.

Is this now common practice!?

Presumably the original GP didn’t consider them cancerous or you would have been seen within a couple of weeks.
What did the GP who has had further training in this area think?

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 20/10/2023 16:02

I wouldn't expect to see a consultant if I was being referred to a community team.

LIZS · 20/10/2023 16:06

Community team is often a local triage/diagnostic/follow up team, who will take pictures and refer to a consultant.

muddyford · 20/10/2023 16:10

Our practice does the same. If the expert GP finds anything sinister you will be referred on.

androidnotapple · 20/10/2023 16:10

Yes this is standard, these GPs have usually done at least a year long diploma and know their stuff.

Maybemaybenot76 · 20/10/2023 16:46

Rightio. So I can trust their decision that no further action is required?

I wasn’t seen by a GP initially, I was seen by a paramedic at my surgery as that was the earliest appt.

Ours does the same

Lioney · 20/10/2023 17:02

Our surgery does the same.

I have severe Facial & Ocular and Rosacea.

The doctor I seen was totally out of her depth and asked me how much I sun bathed as I was so red... 🙈

What ? Seen by a paramedic ? Are they trained to analyse skin??
Ask for a GP At least If you pay you could probably see a Dermatologist tomorrow Peace of mind

Think op means she saw a paramedic at the gp practice who referred to community clinic.
