Lump in breast…

Name changed just in case! Not looking for advice really, just a place to air my thoughts.

I have in the last couple of days discovered a large lump in my breast. It seemingly came out of nowhere, is painful and about the same size as a ping pong ball I think. Maybe slightly smaller.

I’ve managed to book myself a GP appointment for tomorrow which is very lucky it’s so soon! Any idea what I should expect after this? Will they do a mammogram? I’m 34 and have never had one.

I’m a little worried to be honest. I know it could be so many other things, but I can’t help but worry.

You have done absolutely the right thing acting quickly and seeing your GP. If your GP thinks it needs to be checked out, you will most likely be referred for a mammogram and an ultrasound and then they may take a biopsy to test the lump. Again this normally happens quite quickly (within a couple of weeks).

Try not to worry (easier said than done I know)

Thanks, I’m glad I got an appointment so quickly. Whatever it is I want it gone as it’s causing me a lot of pain! I’m hoping that means it’s a cyst rather than the other c word. And the fact it appeared so quickly is hopefully a good sign too.

I have my appointment in 3 hours (I’m in Aus) so will update after that

I had a similar worry recently and to be honest my mind spiraled to the worst possible outcome due to family history but it was a cyst which has now disappeared after a few weeks. You have done the best thing by getting it seen to quickly. Best of luck to you

Been to the GP, she was so lovely and reassured me these things are usually cysts, without minimising my concerns at all.

I’m booked for a mammogram and ultrasound next week

Happy to hear yours turned out ok! Was it painful?

I'm a bit older than you (36) and when this happened to me this year I had to go to the breast clinic. I had an appointment 5 days after the GP appt but it can take up to 2 weeks. I wasn't given a mammogram as younger women have denser breast tissue so it can make it harder to see anything so was given an ultrasound instead.

Be kind to yourself, it's frightening but you are in the best hands
