Does anyone know why my thumbnail turning black from within? It was a small spot which I thought was a blood clot, but it is gradually enlarging. I've attached a photo.
Anyone?

Colouredthumb you definitely need to get that thumb checked out to rule out a melanoma (skin cancer) growing under the nail. It may be nothing at all but best to be sure. Phone your GP and ask to have it checked.

C1N1C · 18/09/2023 08:13

The obvious one is, did you bang it?

coloredthumb · 18/09/2023 08:24

Thank you for your response. I'll ring my GP.
No, I didn't bang it at all so it's a bit odd.
It began about a month ago.

Hopefully it's nothing to worry about - maybe you did bang it without realising but you are right to go to the GP.

Wrinklecrinkle · 18/09/2023 08:29

I second this absolutely needs checking. Rule out melanoma if no trauma.

StanleyGoodspeed · 18/09/2023 10:12

I would definitely get that looked at

coloredthumb · 18/09/2023 12:36

My doctor isn't in today so I will ring back tomorrow.
I'm so terrified now, after going down the google rabbit hole and seeing some thumb discolourations similar to mine!

Step away from Google Colouredthumb. It's not been there for months and months that issue so you are getting it checked in a timely manner - you are doing the right thing getting it checked. Don't meet trouble half way.

I say this as someone stalking the postman for mammogram results at the moment 💐

Thanks for the advice.
I'm trying my best.
I just got off a cancer scare that took me on a 2-month rollercoaster, so I'm still on the edge.
Hope all is well with you. Hope the mammogram comes back okay. Sending you lots of warmth 💐💐💐

That's very kind of you 💐 I had a bowel cancer scare earlier in the year and, like you, I'm just recovering from that ordeal.

I'm only one week into the mammogram result wait - it's taking up to six weeks here to get the results out and it crossed my mind that if I was recalled for further tests, that letter would come sooner.

I'm sure whatever you have will be very treatable as it's not there long. At least you kept an eye on things. All best wishes from me.

Jellykat · 18/09/2023 19:34

Definitely get it checked out, i had a toenail recently that had a vertical Black line initially, which spread across the whole nail..

In my case a photo was immediately sent to a consultant, and the outcome all fine, most likely was a case of 'trauma' he said.. i.e i mustve knocked it or some such, which i dont recall. Its slowly growing out now.,

Good luck, scary business i know, i'd had a mole cut out for analysis not long ago, so know what it feels like.

NeedHelp000 · 18/09/2023 20:29

no harm in getting the GP to have a quick look at it.
good luck let us know x

I understand how you must be feeling. I had a cervical cancer scare - was initially told my tumour was cancerous and then was later told it isn't, thank goodness. It was a really overwhelming period of multiple hospital visits in a day for a while.
Please look after yourself and try not to catastrophise ( I wish I'd take my own advice).

All will be well. 🫂

I'm so glad it turned out okay for you. That's what life is - the rough and the smooth, isn't it? Hoping for a smooth path for you.

Any update OP?

coloredthumb · 21/09/2023 14:52

Apologies for the delayed update. My doctor asked me to stay off the internet. I took that advice literally:)

I've been referred to the cancer team. Doctor says he doubts it'd be anything but subungual melanoma is the first thing that comes to mind, and we better to check to be certain since there was no trauma involved. I'm told there's a few weeks' wait, so I'm waiting.

Thank you for update OP, tbh i didnt remember any knocks with my toe, so yours could still be trauma. With nails we could be talking many many weeks ago..
Hope all turns out well, try not to worry.. from what i remember when i googled (yep i did it too) the baddies had a weird 'break down' in areas either side of the nail.

Still waiting to be called by the clinic; a small part at the top of the nail's now cracked.
Unsure what that's about.
